EXTREME RELAY DIRTALES Team Membership Team Members can change up until the start. No changes after the start! Team members must be human even if you’re dog follows trails better. You can run with less than 5 people on a team but not more than 5; Heck, you paid for 5. All team members must sign a waiver & turn it in! Did we say this? Visit dwdhell.com to update your team information. Handicap Age and sex handicap for each team member will be added together for the team handicap. This percentage will be deducted from the total finishing time to determine YOUR ADJUSTED HANDICAP TIME. Women receive a 12.5 % handicap in addition to age handicap. Masters men and women receive a 1.0% handicap for each year over 40 and 1.5% handicap for each year over 50. Example: A 52-year-old woman would get a 23.5% handicap. If everyone else on the team was male and under 41 the team would get a 4.7% handicap (23.5/5) Confused? You should be! Vehicles You must have a Michigan Passport to enter the park. Either you signed up for it when you renewed you MI license plates or it’ll cost you $10 (2011 price). Official Vehicle Signs must be visible in rear window of all vehicles on the course and to park! Meet and car pool to the start, (we got repeat-heimers). One vehicle per team on the course. DWD Vehicle Sign on the back and Park Pass on Front. No motor homes, rickshaws, busses or PT Cruisers (too ugly). Finish Cut Off Time 7:30 PM but 6:30 PM is much preferable. Use concurrent running (cheating); see Cheat Sheet. It’s important to finish before we eat all the pizza! Rules Race Numbers on your Front: each team will have 5 identical numbers. All legs must be run in the order presented and to completion, (No improvised shortcuts). Determine the strategy to best suit your talents. Each team runner is required to run a minimum of 3 legs unless injury occurs. Only one runner per team runs a leg unless injury occurs. See Injury Substitution below. Each leg begins from one exchange point and ends at the next exchange point. While you run, your team drives to the next exchange in a timely fashion. Sometimes the leg is a loop and the team does not drive. There is plenty of time to drive to each exchange point. Exchange Etiquette: o At the exchange, alert your teammate by screaming and yelling. o Allow adequate space to execute the exchange. No pushing, no crowding, no peeing in the pool. Huh, wrong list. o Exchange is usually made by making physical contact with the next runner in the exchange zone. Some exchanges may be Air Touch to avoid traffic and danger situations. Lost & Found: If you arrive and no teammate can be found, let the aexchange captain know and chill out. We will start a search and usually will find your directionally challenged teammate. “Head Goat, what if our next/replacement runner isn’t at the exchange?” We won’t punish you for being unable to get your next runner to an exchange. If by chance your runner arrives at the exchange before your next runner gets there, have the arriving runner start a watch when they get there and stop it when the next runner starts. Put this on your cheat card as a negative number. Drive Route Detail drive instructions to each exchange point are provided. The routes are fairly direct and provide sufficient time to travel to the next exchange point. You will notice that we have not always chosen the most direct route. We have tried to avoid roads where runners cross (Warning: The drive route will still cross the course several times). This will allow the runners to avoid your exhaust/insults and some danger. It is also designed to allow for responsive medical emergencies and management of the race. We do understand that sometimes you may miss a turn because the stench in the vehicle gets intolerable and you have your head out the window and not on the map. Good Samaritan Act Please help the injured. As a participant, you are first on the scene. Keeptrack of any lost time in assisting the injured on Cheat Sheet. We will deduct the time. Injury Substitution A team can complete the leg of an injured teammate form the point of injury. An injured member is out of the race. Only original team members can represent the team. An injury substitution is the only allowed non-exchange point exchange. That is, otherwise exchange at exchange points only. 100K Relay Course Mostly trail with some stupid spots and a bit of road. Designed as a separate race from the other events but shares many sections. Course is a series of sections - “legs” - between Exchange Points. All legs must be completed in the order presented. Further details about the legs are elsewhere in this packet. Legs are from 2.5 to 6.8 miles in length if you do not get lost. Each team member is to run 3 legs. Decide how to best utilize or torture each runner. Back to back legs will probably equate to a slower over all time and a higher chance of injury. Come up with a plan to start with and be ready to change once the whining starts. We advertise DWD as a trail run with "Stupid Spots"; several of these legs are stupid runs with "Trail Spots"… Don’t get hung up on the mileage, sometimes a 3 mile leg will take longer and will be more work than a 4 mile leg! Actually, it will all seem like twice as long as it is. You may find it worse than it sounds … but in the end, you will miss it! Exchange Points Some exchange points are aid stations for the Ultra runners. The food and drinks are for the Ultra runners. H2O & First Aid is for all. YOU MUST CHEAT WHEN INSTRUCTED TO! If you have a fun team and are running a bit slow, you may be instructed to start your next runner before your previous runner finishes. Cheating Bastard Instructions: Start a watch as the early leaving runner starts. When the early runner starts they must yell out, "I am a cheating bastard!" Stop the watch when the incoming runner finishes. Post the time to the "Going to Hell for Cheating" Card Once you’ve got your previous runner, jump in the car and head off to the next exchange. If your early-leaving runner beats you to the exchange, they will have to wait. You will send off a runner when you get there, no worries, you cheated anyway. This legal cheating will assure you make it to the post-race party. Cheating Bastard Helpful Hints Keep a running time of your runner currently on the course, starting at Leg 1. Helps to guess how lost. Not all legs are open to Cheating Bastard early leave as they are very short and fast. The runner will beat the car! We announce that it is time to concurrent run at the exchanges where it is permitted. Upon special circumstances, the race directors will provide permission to leave early at other exchanges during the race, (Examples: Runner decided to go to Jackson prison- year 1 or run home – year 8.) Lost: If runner is hopelessly lost, (averaging over 17 minutes per mile), tell race officials the team number and runner description. Then start a second watch as next leg runner leaves early. o Found: Record time difference to Cheating Bastards card if the first runner ever shows up. o Not Found: If the first runner never shows up, inform race officials that the team has abandoned them and left the area. Record the “we give the hell up on that slacker” time difference on the Cheating Bastards card. You do not get time off for a lost or pathetic runner. Time Entry: All Teams turn in a signed To Hell for Cheating Card with Good Samaritan, Cheating Bastard Concurrent Times or a big 0. Total the times on the Card and turn in as your team crosses the finish line. This time is adjusted to your official finish time. Cards not totaled or turned in may face maximum time adjustment, additional running miles or be subjected to substantial ridicule. No torture this year. Actually, we prefer that you get hurt on the trail instead of on the road or in a car. The drive route is generally the shortest route with the highest portion of paved roads and the least conflict (Not, “No Conflict!”!) with incoming vehicles and runners. Basic concepts: 1. Be on high watch for runners crossing the roads as they do bolt from the trails! 2. 3. 4. 5. Follow the precise drive route Be attentive to parking instructions from the exchange volunteers. Stay in designated entrances, flow lanes and exits. Use odometer – trip odometer Do not lay down behind the wheels of a vehicle in parking areas (Common … and ugly!)
