Byelaws that relate to the Yealm Estuary
Byelaw 3 – Scallop Close Season : No scallops shall be fished for or taken from a fishery
before 0700 and after 1900hrs
No scallop to be taken from a fishery during July August
and September each year
Byelaw 6 – Restrictions on Trawling: No person shall trawl or trammel net for fishing for sea fish
in the landward side of a line drawn from Season Point to
Mouthstone Point in the Yealm Estuary.
Byelaw 10 – Winkles:
No person shall remove from a fishery any winkle that pass
easily through a gauge within a square opening of 16mm
Byelaw 17 – Fixed Engines (nets):
No fixed engines may be set in the waters inshore of a line
drawn from Season Point to Mouthstone Point on the River
Yealm
Byelaw 19 – Prohibiting Netting:
No net shall be used for taking fish in all tidal waters inside
a line drawn 203o True from Season Point to Mouthstone
Point
Byelaw 22 – Pots used for fishing for Crustacea:
Escape gap must be fitted to any pot, which has an
entrance fitted with a soft eye, to be used for the
fishing of brown crabs, lobsters and spider crabs.
Byelaw 27 Undersized and Berried Lobsters:
The minimum landing size for lobsters in the Devon &
Severn IFCA district is 90mm
No berried (eggs bearing) lobsters shall be removed from
a fishery
The Bass ( Specified Areas ) ( Prohibition of Fishing ) Order 1990
As varied by 1999 No. 75
The Bass ( Specified Areas ) ( Prohibition of Fishing ) Order 1999
Prohibition
Fishing for bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ), or fishing for any species of seafish using sand-eels ( Ammodytidae as bait, by any fishing boat within any
part of the areas shown below is prohibited during the periods specified.

Byelaw 23 – Dredging in Salcombe Estuary:
Dredging for scallops is authorised to permit holder issued
by Devon and Severn IFCA within the Salcombe Estuary
between a line drawn across from Snapes Point to Scoble
Point and a line drawn across the estuary from Woodville
Rocks to Ager Point. The permitted fishery is restricted in
gear type used, time of year, time of day and boat size.
