ANDHRA UNIVERSITY NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME A REPORT ON NSS ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2014-2015 Observance of Vehicle Free Campus Day Andhra University administration in association with NSS Cell observes on 28th day of every month as “Vehicle Free Campus”. The Hon’ble ViceChancellor of Andhra University adopted and implemented this Environmental Protection Programme to create awareness on the importance of conservation of natural resources and to provide clean and safe environment to the future generations and pave the way for sustainable development. All officials and staff of the University and also public have kept their vehicles at outside the campus and walked into the campus. This campaign was well received by the citizens of Visakhapatnam and also extended their support for this noble activity. NSS Volunteers service in General Elections As per the direction of the Chief Electoral Officer, Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad the services of NSS volunteers were utilized for the election duty in the Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts on 7th May, 2014. About 3,500 NSS volunteers involved in maintaining the queue of voters on day of poll as furnished by the respective departments for the General Election-2014 and also issued postal ballot to every volunteer to franchise their vote. International Drug Abuse Prevention Day The Andhra University Vice-Chancellor released a poster in connection with observance of International Drug Abuse Prevention Day on 26th June, 2014. The Greenvalley Foundation Chairperson Smt. Uma Raj took active role in releasing the poster. While releasing the informative poster on prevention of Drug Abuse, Prof. G.S.N. Raju said that health is wealth. Hence youth should maintain a physical fitness with good health by avoiding drugs, smoking, alcohol and other evils. This function was witnessed by Rector Prof. E.A Narayana, Registrar Prof. K. Rama Mohana Rao, Prof. P. Arjun, Head of the Dept. of Social Work, Prof. DVR Murthy, Dept. of Journalism & Mass Communication, Dr. S. Haranath and Dr. A.R.N. Hanuman of Andhra University. The N.S.S Volunteers took part in awareness rallies conducted in Visakhapatnam, Gas Blast at Nagaram Village, East Godavari, A.P. The Andhra University NSS Cell under the able guidance of ViceChancellor Prof. G.S.N. Raju take-up every activity for Community Development. 2 It is said to note that recently Gas Blowout took place in Nagaram village of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Due to Gas blowout, a major fire accident took place in Nagaram, which devastated the village severely. Nearly 20 people died and many were hospitalized. Hence, the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University Prof. G.S.N. Raju, called an urgent meeting on 28.06.2014 with NSS Programme Co-ordinator and other NSS functionaries. He directed them to serve the fire victims immediately and gave Rs.50,000/- from University grants to distribute it to the family members of fire victims. He also instructed them to assess the casualties and console them. Immediately NSS Programme Co-ordinator Dr. N.A.D. Pal along with NSS Team rushed to Nagaram village on 28.06.2014, went around the village and observed the locations where this disaster took place. NSS Programme Co-ordinator contacted the family members of the fire victims and consoled them. He handed over Rs.2,000/- to each family. He expressed solidarity with them. Later, he visited KIMS Hospital, Amalapuram and Apollo Hospital, Trust Hospital at Kakinada where they fire victims were admitted for medical treatment. He had seen the patients expressed good and courageous words for their speedy recovery. He contacted local community leaders, people representatives and expressed support and co-operation from the NSS Cell of Andhra University. The NSS Cell of Andhra University planned to visit the village very soon and also to distribute rice, clothes and other essentialities as part of relief to the victims. Training of Trainers (TOT) on Social Harmony and National Unity Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu organized a Training of Trainers Programme on Social Harmony and Human Rights for NSS Programme Officers (Freshers) belonging to Scheduled Caste at Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda, Telangana state from 24th to 28th June, 2014. World Population Day On July 11, 2014 World Population Day was observed and rallies were organized by all the NSS Units. In Andhra University area a good number of Rallies, Slogans, Road Shows were conducted by the NSS volunteers on “Small Family–Endless Happiness”. In this connection, various competitions conducted in A.U. A Massive Rally with 2,000 NSS volunteers was organized in 3 Visakhapatnam and distributed Mementos, Certificates to the Prize winners by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Assembly hall, A.U., Visakhapatnam. Inter-collegiate NSS Mega Camps at A.U. Campus The Andhra University NSS Cell organized two (2) Inter-collegiate NSS Mega Camps from 13.07.2014 to 19.07.2014 and 12.08.2014 to 18.08.2014 at Andhra University Campus, Visakhapatnam. About 300 NSS volunteers participated in each Mega Camp from different colleges in Visakhapatnam. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Rector and Registrar of Andhra University were present and appreciated the NSS volunteer for rendering services. Workshop on Contemporary Relevance of Social Sciences A one day district level workshop on Contemporary Relevance of Social Sciences organized at SGA Govt. Degree College, Yellamanchili, Visakhapatnam on 20.08.2014. All the NSS volunteers of concerned colleges in Visakhapatnam participated in this workshop in a befitting manner. State Level NSS Awards Function Andhra University NSS Cell hosted A.P. State level NSS Awards Function-2014 on 24.09.2014 at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Assembly Hall, Andhra University. He stressed the importance of Voluntary Blood Donation and motivated NSS volunteers to come forward to donate Blood voluntarily. It is the youth who are very dynamic and energetic and they should maintain good health and donate blood frequently. Towards creating awareness amongst general public on keeping beaches clean, a large scale cleanup drive on this occasion. The NSS volunteer of A.U. area observed this programme in a befitting manner. Workshop on awareness on Welfare Measures for Differently Abled Students Forum for Differently Abled Research Scholars and Students of Andhra University in association with AU NSS Cell organized one day workshop on Awareness on Welfare Measures for Differently Abled Students on 12.09.2014 at Andhra University. In this connection, many students participated from various colleges/institutions in this workshop to get Awareness on Welfare Measures for Differently Abled Students. World Ozone Day In connection with observance of World Ozone Day on 16th September, 2014, the NSS Cell of Andhra University in association with Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board organized an awareness Rally on protection of Ozone Layer in Environment. To mark this occasion, the NSS volunteers raised slogans on protection and preservation of Ozone layer, and conservation of energy, 6 environmental protection, etc. They hold placards with informative captions and banners. The local citizens were also involved in this campaign. NSS Day Celebrations The NSS Cell of A.U. organised NSS Day celebrations at A.U. Campus on 22.09.2014 in a befitting manner. In this context, many competitions were conducted i.e., essay writing, elocution, poster painting, and cultural programmes. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of A.U., Prof. G.S.N. Elders Day The NSS volunteers observed Elders Day on 1st October. As part of this, the volunteers visited Old-Age Homes, where they distributed fruits to the elders. Swachh Bharat Campaign In response to the call given to the Nation by our Hon’ble Prime Minister, the NSS Cell of Andhra University plunged into service for Swachh Bharat campaign on 27.09.2014. The NSS Cell of Andhra University organized meeting with NSS volunteers and eminent persons were invited to deliver talks on themes pertaining to clean and green environment leading to Swachh Bharat campaign. In this meeting, Dr. NAD Pal, NSS Coordinator brought out the significance of clean environment and asked the volunteers to participate in the campaign continuously and voluntarily. Later a massive tree plantation programme was inaugurated by ViceChancellor on 02.10.2014. This programme was also attended by the Rector Prof. E.A. Narayana, Registrar Prof. K. The NSS volunteers dig pits and planted saplings of different varieties which also include fruit baring trees. In the first phase of this programme more than 250 saplings were planted, these plants were protected with tree guards. The NSS volunteers requested the office staff of nearby plantation ground to see that these plants are grown up properly with adequate supply of water to the plants. 7 Gandhiji Jayanthi The local NSS volunteers participated in peace rallies, organized in connection with Gandhiji Jayanthi on October 2nd. They took pledge on National Integration and Communal Harmony as mark of Gandhi Jayanthi. HUDHUD Cyclone The three coastal districts of north Andhra Pradesh were hit by HUDHUD Cyclone on 12.10.2014 with rapid speed of 220 kms per hour. The Visakhapatnam city including Andhra University was badly hit by speed winds and almost all the trees were rooted out. The power supply and water supply were also severely damaged. At this juncture, AU NSS Cell immediately plunged into the service and cleared the debris, cut the big trunks of the fallen trees to clear the way for transportation, helped the district administration in supplying essential commodities, also helped AU administration in erection of Electric Poles and cleaned the entire premises of Andhra University. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) The NSS Cell of Andhra University observed the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” (National Unity Day) on 31st October, 2014. On this occasion the NSS volunteers of Andhra University participated in Unity Run and spread the message on the importance of Unity, Integrity and Security of our great Nation. Beach, Near Kali Matha Temple, Visakhapatnam. 500 NSS volunteers from different colleges in Visakhapatnam participated in this programme. Good Governance Day The NSS volunteers of Andhra University area celebrated former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Birthday as Good Governance Day on 25.12.2014. The NSS volunteers discussed the importance of Good Governance in day to day administration and its need for proper growth and development of the Nation. The volunteers took rallies on the streets and raised slogans in favour of Good Governance. Further intellectual sessions on Good Governance were 10 organized and academicians from different disciplines spoke on the relevance of good governance in this global arena. To commemorate this day the youth particularly the NSS volunteers recalled the services rendered by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the Nation. The NSS volunteers strongly supported in curbing the corruption for proper good governance. Degree College (Women), Visakhapatnam. As part of this human chain with 500 NSS volunteers at Gandhi Statue Opp. GVMC Main Office, Near RTC Complex, Visakhapatnam at 9.00 a.m. on 25.01.2015 and also organized a massive rally with NSS volunteers. All the NSS Units of Andhra University jurisdiction observed this programme in a befitting manner by highlighting the importance of having Voter Card. Oranising Visakha Utsav Carnival The District Administration organized Visakha Vuthsav Carnival every year in a befitting manner with active participation of citizens of Visakhapatnam and citizens of other parts of the country from 23rd to 25th January, 2015 in Visakhapatnam district. In this connection, the Hon’ble Ministers of Central and State Governments participated in this mega programme. Nearly 350 NSS volunteers deployed for rendering service during Visakha Vuthasav. Republic Day Parade Camp at New Delhi About 3 NSS volunteers (1 male + 2 female) participated in the Republic Day Parade Camp held from 1st to 31st January, 2015 at New Delhi. 1. College for Women Vizianagaram International Women’s Day A Creative Makers in Events (ACME), Vizag together with CVR News Channel and Andhra University organized International Women’s Day on 7th March, 2015. In this connection, 750 NSS (Girl) volunteers from various colleges in Visakhapatnam city took part in this mega Awareness Rally on 07.03.2015 started from Visakha Govt. Women’s College, Old Jail Road, Visakhapatnam, This is a one and half hour rally on Women Empowerment based on the United Nations (UN) theme for this year 2015 ‘Make It Happen’. Organisation of World TB Day World TB Day on March 24th in every year, is designed to build public awareness on T.B. tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries. In this connection, the District Administration in association with Medical and Health Department organized a meeting on 24.03.2015 at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Assembly Hall, Andhra University. All the NSS volunteers from Visakhapatnam participated in the meeting. Special Camping Programmes 165 NSS Special Camping programmes organized by the colleges. Road formation A total of nearly 65 kms of Roads was formed by all the NSS volunteers of Andhra University in their regular and special camping activities. Repair of Road Nearly 65 km of Road repaired by all the volunteers of A.U. area HIV/AIDS Programme 14 215 HIV/AIDS awareness programmes were conducted, and nearly 40,320 people benefited through this awareness programme. Water Harvesting Pits In the Special Camping programmes, 325 water harvesting pits were dug by the volunteers. Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme 64,475 children administered the vaccine in the Pulse Polio Immunization programme. Illiterates made literates 61,000 illiterates made literates under Regular and Special Camping programmes under A.U. jurisdiction. Health Awareness Campaign 23,100 people are benefited in health awareness campaigns undertaken by the NSS volunteers while conducting Regular and Special Camping programmes. Repair of Check Dams 5 check dams are repaired by the volunteers while conducting Special Camping Programmes.
