Practice Newsletter – October 2015

Latest news from the team

We would like to welcome Fiona Frame who is joining us in the position of Practice Nurse at the beginning of October and wish her well in her new role.

We would like to say congratulations to Dr Mei-Ling Lancashire who had a baby girl in

September.

Flu season is here…

If you are 65 or over, or in an ‘at risk’ group, you are eligible to receive this annual vaccination and our flu campaign has started. Please contact the surgery to make an appointment. If you are eligible and do not wish to have the vaccination please let us know so that we can remove you from this season’s flu programme.

Pneumococcal vaccination

Anyone aged over 65 is also encouraged to have a once in a lifetime Pneumococcal vaccine.

Please contact reception to make an appointment.

Whooping cough vaccination for pregnant women

If you are between 28-38 weeks pregnant you are eligible to receive a vaccination to protect you and your unborn child from whooping cough. You can have this vaccine up to 8 weeks after given birth too to prevent any spread from you to your new baby.

MEN ACWY Vaccination

Due to the increase in cases of meningitis a new vaccine has been recommended for all 17-

18 year olds in school year 13 – eligible patients are those born between 1 st September 1996 and 31 st August 1997.

Please contact reception to book an appointment.

Free NHS Health Checks

We are now offering free NHS Heath Checks to our patients who are aged between 40 and

74 and who do not have a history of stroke, heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes.

Please contact the surgery for an appointment or for more information.

Coughs and Colds

Please remember that the symptoms of coughs and colds cannot be relieved with antibiotics

– just plenty of fluids and rest. Please visit your local chemist, where the pharmacist will be able to offer advice on which medication will be best suited to your symptoms.

Repeat Medication

When starting your last pack of repeat medication please remember to put in the next request at that point rather than waiting until you have run out altogether. The turnaround process for requests is 48 hours. Telephone requests for medication cannot be accepted but if you would like to order your repeat prescriptions via the internet please register on our website or ask at reception to obtain your individual password.

Please only order what you actually need.

Named GP

The practice is required to inform patients who their Accountable GP is. Please ask at reception when you are next in the surgery or check on any repeat prescriptions. Having a named GP does not prevent you from seeing any other doctor in the practice.

Appointments

Patients are seen by appointment and wherever possible with their choice of preferred practitioner

To book a routine appointment please call the surgery on 01276 476333 and you will be offered the next available appointment. Please bear in mind that if you are requesting a specific doctor you may have to wait longer for an appointment.

We also offer on-line advance appointment booking with the doctors for patients aged 16 years or over. Please register to use this service using the link on our website - www.bagshot.doctors.co.uk or ask at reception to obtain your individual password.

Home visits – If possible please try to telephone reception before 10:00 am if you require a home visit. Please remember that home visits are only for urgent matters or for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability.

A doctor or nurse may phone you back as it may be that your problem can be dealt with by telephone advice, or that it would be more appropriate to send a nurse, or indeed arrange a hospital attendance.

Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the surgery.

Are you a Carer?

If you are a child or adult and look after a relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without your help because of long term sickness, age or disability, and the care you provide is unpaid, you are a Carer.

The term carer should not be confused with that of a paid care worker or someone who acts as a volunteer attached to a voluntary organisation.

The reason for this exercise is to identify the number of carers in the area to ensure that they are offered the help and advice that is available to assist and support them.

Information for carers is displayed in the waiting room.

If you read this and realise that you are a carer please ask for a carer registration form at reception.

Private services

Please note that requests for letters, including those in connection with applications for memberships, holiday cancellations, fitness to travel and private insurance claim forms, are not an NHS service and as such a fee is payable.

Some travel vaccinations will also incur a charge as they are not provided free on the NHS.A list showing our scale of fees for private services is displayed in the reception area.

When we are closed

When we are closed A & E should not always be considered as the first point of call. A & E attendances are costly to the NHS and often involve lengthy waits to be seen and some minor ailments can be managed successfully at home with simple first aid or advice from the out of hours service. To obtain medical assistance out of hours phone 111 and the operator will direct you to the right service and arrange for you to see a doctor if appropriate.

Call 111 if:

 You need medical help but it’s not an emergency

 You think you may need to go to A & E

 You need health information or reassurance about what to do next

For emergencies continue to call 999 www.bagshot.doctors.co.uk
