Stained Glass Window Project
Project/Writing Assessment
Mrs. Camarco
Due Dates: Period 6, Monday February 3rd and Period 8, Tuesday February 4th.
Throughout our unit on the Middle Ages, we have discussed how literature of the time period was often
shared orally by storytellers or visually in the form of stained glass windows, tapestries and sculptures.
Stained glass windows told stories to the people who viewed them; they were an important way for the
Medieval Culture to share their stories with a population that was mostly illiterate. They told stories
from the Bible and from their history; about battles and kings and conquests. For this assignment, you
are going to create your own stained glass window.
Like the Lady of Shalott, you are going to reflect on the world around us and think about a story that is
important enough to be shared with future generations about today’s world.
o First, decide on an event that you think everyone should remember about
today’s world. Choose an important story, a significant person or an important
event to depict in a contemporary stained glass window. This SHOULD be an
event that you remember so your own insight can be included. Regardless, you
must research your event to learn as much as you can about it before you create
your window.
o Once you have researched your topic, think about the message you want to
convey through your window. What symbols do you want to include? How should the
o
images be arranged? What kind of boarder would be important? What colors do you
want to use? What materials should be used to create your stained glass window?
You should be creative in the way you construct your stained glass window. It should
not be larger than 12” x 18” in size. You may cut and paste with construction paper, use
cellophane or colored tissue, make a collage using pieces of magazine or newspaper
clippings, string, wire, toothpicks, etc. The important things is that your project should
look like it has been put together by using bits and pieces of different colors.
 This should go without saying, but just to be sure, do not use actual glass or any other sharp
materials to create your stained glass window.
o
You must write and type up a supplemental viewers guide that explains your window
and the event that it reflects. Explain why you feel that this contemporary story is an
important one to preserve and teach future generations. You must include specific
information and details about your event; where you found this information must be
cited. Also, you must explain why you chose the symbols, designs, colors, and any other
aspects of your stained glass window. You will be assessed on the guidelines found at
the end of this assignment guide.
o
Your stained glass window will be displayed around the room. We will engage in a
gallery walk activity where everyone will have time to examine each other’s window,
offering comments and feedbacks as they observe.
