Antonio enters.) Child # 1: Sure, what about? Antonio: It’s about me. I am the Merchant of Venice. Children: Cool. Antonio: Yes, unfortunately no one tells my story anymore. That might be why I feel so melancholy. Child # 2: Melancholy – what does that mean? Antonio: It means I am sad, depressed, moody, distraught, moapy… Child # 3: Okay, we get the picture. Antonio: So what do you say? Can I tell you my story? Show you my play? Children: I guess so. Child # 2: As long as you keep it short. We are just children and we have short attention spans. Antonio: Okay, I’ll tell it quickly – you’re going to love this story. I know it. I’m just going to bring in a few of my friends to tel my story. Salarino and Solanio! Get out here. We have an audience. (they enter) Okay we’re going to get started. Listen carefully and I will try to tell you this story in 17 and a half minutes or less. Children: Okay Salarino and Solanio: Why are you so melancholy, Antonio? Antonio: I just don’t know – I wish I knew, but I just can’t figure it out. Antonio: Hello, children. Would you like to hear a story? 2 Solanio: Maybe you’re like all those business men who stress over their business ventures. Gratiano: What’s your problem? You look bummed. Don’t be that guy who is always stressing about his business ventures. Antonio: I don’t think that’s what’s wrong. I am the Merchant of Venice, so I know my business ventures will do well. Antonio: I’m not that guy. I’m just feeling destined for a life of sadness. Solanio: Perhaps you’re in love. Gratiano: Get over it – you are such a downer. Salarino: Unquited love. Antonio: I hear you’re in love, Bassanio. Tell me about her. Child # 1: Excuse me. What does that mean? Bassanio: She is a rich and beautiful heiress named, Portia. Salario and Solanio: It means that the person you love does not love you back. Child # 3: Heiress? Antonio: That couldn’t be it – I mean, look at me – I’m the Merchant of Venice. Who wouldn’t love me? (Bassanio, Lorenzo and Gratiano enter.) Bassanio, my very, very bestest friend, it’s so good to see you. Antonio: It means she gets a fortune from her parents. Bassanio: Hello. I’m his best friend. Bassinio: And that’s why I have come. I know that I already owe you lots of money, but I need to borrow some more to woo the rich and beautiful Portia in Belmont where she lives. Children: We’re all best friends too. (They all give each other nods and thumbs up.) Bassanio: This is Gratiano, my outspoken friend. Children: Oh! Antonio: Of course, anything for your happiness…But actually, I have no money available. It’s all tied up in the ships I sent out on my last business venture. Gratiano: I’m only outspoken because I’m not spoken for. (laughs at own joke obnoxiously.) Bassanio: Darn. Lorenzo: Hey. I’m Lorenzo, I’m friends with Antonio and Bassanio. Antonio: I know, you can borrow money from a money lender and I’ll sign for you. Children: Hey. Bassanio: Great idea, let’s go. (they exit) Salario and Solanio: We got to go, good bye. (They exit.) Gratiano: (to the children) Is it just me, or does it seem a bad idea for Antonio to just keep lending Bassanio money? (The children respond with shrugs and nods.) Lorenzo, Gratino, Bassinio and Children: Good-bye. 3 Antonio: If I didn’t lend Bassanio money then there would be no story and then none of you other characters would even exits, including you. Gratiano: Good point. Antonio: Now, let’s get on with my story. Moving on to Act 1, Scene 2 – in Belmont. Child # 1: What’s an act? Children: Oh. Nerrisa: But at least none of them have been willing to guess your father’s riddle of which door your portrait is behind, the gold door, the silver door or the lead door. But I guess that’s because if they choose wrong they must agree NEVER to marry. Portia: I hope that doesn’t scare Bassanio away. I liked him. He is pretty cute. Bassanio: (leaning onstage) She’s talking about me. Just saying, just saying. (then off) Child # 2: What’s a scene? Nerrisa: Yes, he is a worthy gentleman. (Belthesar enters) Child # 3: What’s a Belmont? Child # 3: Wait, who are you? Antonio: Acts and scenes are a way of organizing a play into parts. And my play, has a lot of parts. And Belmont is a location, where Portia lives, actually. Balthsar: I’m Balthesar, Portia’s servant – not to be confused with the Balthesar, the Montegue servant from Romeo and Juliet. That’s a different play entirely. Children: Okay. (Portia and Nerrisa enter.) Portia: Hey, I’m the beautiful and rich Portia that you’ve already heard so much about. Nerrisa: And I’m Nerrisa. Portia’s lady in waiting. Hello. Portia: I do not like my suitors. Children: Okay. . Portia: What’s up, Balthesar? Balthesar: The Prince of Morroco is here to pick a door to try and win your hand in marrage. He says that if he does not choose the right door, he is willing to never marry, because you are the only woman that he wants and he can’t have you then he doesn’t want anyone. Child # 2: What’s a suitor? Portia: Someone who wants to marry me. Portia: What a sap – I don’t like this guy already and I’ve never even met him. Come, Nerrissa, let’s go, and keep your fingers crossed that there are no wedding bells in his future. (Portia, Balthesar and Nerrisa exit.) Children: Oh. Portia: But in this case I don’t want to marry any of them. Antonio: Okay, this is Act 1, Scene 3 – we are now back in Venice at the money lender’s place. (Shylock and Lancelot enters.) 4 Shylock: Yes, it is I, Shylock, the wealthy money lender. (evil laugh) And master of the evil laugh. (evil laugh) If you were to read the actual play, you would realize that my character is much more complex. People actually usually have a lot of sympathy for me because… Antonio: Okay, Shylock, just put a sock in it. We don’t have time for all this chatter. And besides, this play is not about you, it’s about me, so just deal with it. Shylock: Fine. (Bassanio enters.) Shylock: Let’s go and get our contract signed. Antonio: Okay. And I sign the contract and then we move to Act 2, Scene 1 in Belmont. (Antonio signs the contract, Bassanio, Lancelot and Shylock exit. Prince of Morocco, Nerissa and Portia enter.) Prince of Morocco: I, brave Prince of Morroco, have come to pick a door. Portia: Let’s go to dinner first, I’m hungry. (aside) And I’ll delay this as long as possible. Bassanio: I need a large loan to win the heart of the rich and beautiful Portia. Antonio: I will back the loan. Shylock: A loan to the friend of the Merchant of Venice? But we are arch enemies. Prince of Morocco: Alright, as long as I get to go with you, I will go. (Portia sighs and exits with the Prince of Morocco and Nerrisa.) Antonio: And now, Act 2, Scene 2. We’re in Lancelot’s house. I’ll let him explain himself. (Lancelot enters.) Antonio: Then let’s be friends and just put all our arch enemy stuff behind us. Shylock: Hmm, it will not be easy to forget all the nasty names you called me. But, hey, why not? Let me draw up a contract. (as he is typing) I’m going to forget all those times you called me a dog, and a gross face, and silly head. (finishing the contract) There, sign it, and just ignore that little part about me getting to take a pound of your flesh if you do not pay back the loan in time– that was just a typo. Lancelot: Remember me? I was in the other scene, but had no lines. That’s because Shylock doesn’t let me say anything. I’m his servant, but I’m sick of being his servant. (Gobbo enters.) Gobbo: (swing his cane wildly) Ahhh! Who’s there? Who’s in my house? Lancelot: It’s me, your son. I live here. Put down the sword, dad. Bassano: Um, I’m a little nervous about you signing it. Gobbo: Right! I remember you. You do sound a lot like my son. Antonio: Do not worry. I am the Merchant of Venice and my ships will arrive back safely and make me even richer than I am now. Lancelot: I want to leave Shylock’s employ and become Bassanio’s servant. (Bassanio enters.) Shylock: And besides look, I’m giving you the loan interest free. See – just to show that we are friends now. Bassanio: Hey. Antonio: That’s very kind of you. Gobbo: (swinging cane wildly) Ahhhhh! Stay back, intruder. Stay back. 5 Lancelot: It’s Bassanio, dad. Lancelot: Hey, Jess, I’m becoming Bassanio’s servant now. Gobo: We were just talking about you. Were your ears ringing? Jessica: What a downer. I’ll miss you. Lancelot: I want to be your servant? Bassanio: Sure, I guess. I just stopped by to make sure the paperwork on my loan went through. (Gratiano enters.) Lancelot: You’re so nice, Jess, I might cry…(awkward pause) ah, no, it’s okay. I’m holding back the tears. Gratiano: Hey. Jessica: Yeah, me too. Do me a favour and give Lorenzo this note. It asks him to marry me. Gobbo: (swinging cane wildly) Ahhhhh! Who’s there? On guard! Lancelot: Sure. Good bye, Jess. (Jessica and Lancelot exits.) Gratiano: It’s me, Gratiano, the loud-mouth. Antonio: Act 2, Scene 4 – On a street in Venice. Gratiano, Lorenzo, Salarino, and Solanio get out here – you’re all in this scene. (They enter.) Gobbo: Why does everyone keep barging into my house? Lorenzo: I have something to tell you all. (They lean in to listen.) I love Jess. Gratiano: I came to talk to Bassanio. Hey, big man Bass. Can I come to Belmont with you? I hear the girls down there are super cute. Bassanio: I’m trying to win Portia’s heart. I will only take you if you promise to behave. Gratiano, Salarino and Solanio: (gasp) Our arch enemy’s daughter? Gratiano: Well, she is pretty cute. Salarino and Solanio: Yeah, that’s cool. (Lancelot enters.) Gratiano: I promise. Let’s go. (Gratiano and Bassanio exit. Gobbo goes to go but is stopped) Lancelot: Not you, dad. I’ll see you when I get back. Lancelot: I have a note for Lorenzo. Lorenzo: Thank you. It’s from Jess – she says she loves me too and that we can run away and get married. Gobbo: (disappointedly) Okay. (Lancelot exits.) Gratiano: Oooo. (Lorenzo slaps Gratiano.) Antonio: This is Act 2, Scene 3 – At Shylock’s house. (Jessica enters.) Lorenzo: Stop it. Let’s go celebrate. Jessica: I’m Jessica, Shylock’s daughter. I’m kind of mad at my dad right now. (Lancelot enters.) All: Yeah. (They exit.) 6 Antonio: Okay, so I know what you’re wondering. Why haven’t we seen much of the amazing Merchant of Venice. Me, the star. But don’t worry. I come in by the end to show my act of valour and it all fits together. Anyway, onto Act 2, Scene 5 – at Shylock’s house. (Shylock, Jessica and Lancelot enter.) Shylock: What? You are going to be Bassanio’s servant. I’m going to go have a talk with Bassanio about this and warn him about your over eating and sleeping. Stay here, Jess. (Shylock get’s ready to go out.) Antonio: We’re moving right along – onto Act 2, Scene 7 – and we’re back in Belmont. (The Prince of Morocco, Nerrissa, Balthasar and doors enter.) Prince of Morocco: Time to choose the door with your portrait so that I can marry you. Portia: (sarcastically) Oh goodie! Jessica: (whispering) What did Lorenzo say? Belthzar: Behind one of these doors is Portia’s picture. That’s the one you must choose to win her hand. Ring each doorbell to hear the clue to wear the treasure lies. Lancelot: (whispering) I think he likes you too. Prince of Morroco: Okay (he presses the gold doorbell) Shylock: (spitting them up) What are you two talking about? Front of Gold Door: I am the gold door. He who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire” (Prince of Morroco presses the silver doorbell) Jessica: Nothing. Shylock: I’ll be back soon. (Shylock exits.) Jessica: But I probably won’t be here – bye. (Lancelot and Jessica exit.) Antonio: Act 2, Scene 6 – outside of Shylock’s house. (Gratiano, Salarino and Solanio enter first – then Lorenzo.) Front of Silver Door: I am the silver door. “He who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves” (Prince of Morroco presses the silver doorbell) Front of Lead Door: I am the lead door. “He who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath” Prince of Morroco: Well, I think the prettiest lady’s picture would be behind the most precious metal. I choose the gold door. (Turns the gold door around) Lorenzo: Sorry I’m late – I got stuck in traffic. Back of Gold Door: Buzz – sorry, no one is home. That was the wrong guess. Gratiano, Salarino and Solanio: Okay, let’s go save her. Prince of Morroco: Darn (stomps off) Jessica: (walking out the door) Hey guys - here I am. Portia: Thank goodness. (Balthazar, Nerrisa and Portia exit.) Gratiano: Wait, can you go back inside. We had a heroic rescue planned. Antonio: Act 2, Scene 8 – a street in Venice (Solarino and Solanio enter.) Jessica: I don’t think so – let’s go! (They exit.) 7 Solanio: Wow, Shylock was so mad that his daughter ran away. Solarino: That’s what he get’s for being so mean to the Merchant of Venice for so long. Front of Lead Door: I am the lead door. “Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath” Prince of Arrogon: Getting what I deserve – that sounds like a good deal. Let’s go silver for the win!!! (Turns the silver door around.) Solanio: I hear his ships have not yet returned and he will need to pay Shylock the debt. Back of Silver Door: Buzz – sorry, no one is home. That was the wrong guess Solarino: Oooo – that does not sound good. I hope it all works out okay. (They exit.) Prince of Morroco: Double darn (stomps off) Antonio: My ships are destroyed – not good!!! Let’s not think about it, though – onto Act 2, Scene 9, back in Belmont. (Prince of Arrogon, Portia, Nerrisa, the doors and Balthesar enter.) Portia: Thank goodness. (Balthasar, Portia, the doors and Nerrisa exit.) Antonio: We’re back on a street in Venice for Act 3, Scene 1. (Shylock, Solanio and Solario enter.) Prince of Arrogon: Hey, Portia, I’m the Prince of Arrogon, come to win your hand in marriage by choosing the right door. Shylock: Solanio and Solarino, you helped my daughter escape, didn’t you? Portia: (unenthusiastically) Great – there are the doors. Push the doorbells to hear their clues. Solarino: We tried, but she just walked out the door herself and ruined our grand rescue. Prince of Arrogon: Perhaps a kiss for good luck. Shylock: At least, Antonio’s ships are destroyed and I will get to collect my pound of flesh. (Shylock laughs evilly.) Portia: You wish, buddy. Prince of Arrogon: You are playing hard to get – I like that. You will make a great wife. Now how about those clues. (He presses the gold door bell.) Front of Gold Door: I am the gold door. He who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire” (he presses the silver doorbell) Front of Silver Door: I am the silver door. “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves” (He presses the lead doorbell.) Solarino and Solanio: Ewww. We’ve gotta go tell Antonio that you intend to collect. (Solarinio and Solanio exit. Tubal enters.) Shylock: Friend, Tubal, I’m having a bad day – my daughter ran away and married my arch enemey’s friend and my servant has also joined the dark side. Tubal: That’s rough – I feel for you, buddy. But at least you get to take that pound of flesh. Shylock: Yes, that is cheering me up. (They brighten up and high five as they exit.) 8 Antonio: I am unhappy to hear about the flesh thing, but now back to Belmont for Act 3, Scene 2. (Bassanio, Portia, Nerrisa, Balthazar, Gratiano and the doors enter.) Nerrisa: Gratiano and I have fallen in love also. He wears my ring also and has promised to never take it off. Gratiano: We should have a double wedding. (Solanio, Lorenzo and Jessica enter.) Portia: Bassanio, please don’t choose right now – think about it first. I don’t want to lose your company if you choose wrong. Bassanio: I must choose now. I cannot wait any longer to know if I will be your husband. Lorenzo and Jessica and Solario: Wait. Solarino: Antonia’s ships are destroyed. Jessica: My father plans to collect his pound of flesh. Portia: Alright. Press the doorbells to learn the clues. (Bassanio presses the Gold doorbell.) Lorenzo: But on a happier note, Jess and I got married!!! (Lorenzo shows off his ring, Jessica looks at Lorenzo like this is not a good time for that news.) Front of Gold Door: I am the gold door. He who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire” (he presses the silver doorbell) Bassanio: Oh no, I should not have let my friend lend me that money. Front of Silver Door: I am the silver door. “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves” (he presses the lead doorbell) Portia: Let’s get married right now and I will inherit my fortune. Then I can pay ten times your debt back. Front of Lead Door: I am the lead door. “Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath” Jess: I fear my father wants revenge more than money. Solarino: Antonio asks only to see his good friend once more. Bassanio: (to the children) Do you know which door it is? (They nod and he huddles with the children.) The lead door – okay – that makes sense. Hazzard and give all he hath sounds like marriage. I choose the lead door. (Bassanio opens the lead door.) Back of Lead Door: Ding, ding, ding!!! You have chosen correctly. Congratulations. You can marry the lovely Portia. Portia: Go, help your friend. Bassanio: Yes, right after we marry – let’s got. (They exit.) Antonio: Are you following okay? (Children nodding and thumbs up.) Alright, we’re on Act 3, Scene 4. This scene starts off, unfortunately, with me in jail. (Antonio walks to jail – Shylock and Solarino enter.) Portia: Hurray. Here is a ring. It is a symbol of our love so never take it off. Shylock: Nananah boo boo – you’re in jail. Bassino: I won’t. Antonio: Please, forgive me my debt. 9 Shylock: Never. (Shylock exits laughing.) Antonio: So next is Act 3, Scene 5, but I find this scene is useless so I’m taking it out. (Jessica enter.) Solarino: Don’t worry, Bassanio will save you. (Solarino exits.) Antonio: I hope so or else this play would be considered a tragedy and that would be quite unfortunate for me!!! No where were we? Oh, yes, we’re on Act 3, Scene 4 – back in Belmont. (Lorenzo, Portia and Jessica enter.) Jessica: But I have a speech about Portia being so smart and pretty and nice and amazing… Antonio: I’m the merchant of Venice and it’s my play so I can do whatever I want. Lorenzo: The money you sent will help Antonio and he’s a good man. Jessica: Okay, okay. (Jessica exits.) Portia: Any friend of my husband’s is a friend of mine. I’m glad to help. I have to tend to some things. Lorenzo and Jess, will you please look after my estate while I am gone. Antonio: And now skipping to Act 4, Scene 1 – this is the famous courtroom scene in Venice. Everyone who knows my story knows about this scene – you’ll like it – it’s very exciting!!! (Bassanio, Duke, Shylock, Gratiano and townspeople enter.) Lorenzo and Jessica: Of course. (Lorenzo and Jessica exit.) Portia: Balthezar! Nerrisa! (They enter) Duke: I am the Duke of Venice and I will be the judge this trial. Shylock, you don’t really mean to take a pound of Antonio’s flesh, do you? Especially after he’s lost his fortune. Balthezar and Nerrisa: Yes. Shylock: I will have that pound of flesh. (everyone gasps) Portia: Balthezar, take this letter to my uncle. Bring me the papers and clothes that I require. Gratiano: You’re a jerk, Shylock. Balthezar: Yes. (he exits) Duke: I have just heard that a lawyer has arrived to defend Antonio. Here is the lawyer now. (Portia and Nerrisa enter.) Nerrisa: What are you up to? Portia: I am your lawyer. Portia: We are going to dress like men and go to Venice to greet our husbands in disguise. Nerrisa: I am her, I mean his, law clerk. Shylock: I will represent myself. Nerrisa: But why? Duke: Fine, let the trial begin. Portia: You’ll see. (Portia and Nerrisa exit.) 10 Portia: I will sum up my argument in two words – Have mercy. If you have mercy, we are prepared to give you 5 times the amount he owes. Portio: I don’t need money, but I would love that ring. (Pointing to Bassanio’s ring.) Shylock: I will sum up mine in one – NO. The law says I will have that pound of flesh and I will. Bassanio: But my new wife gave me that. Portia: Go ahead and take it then. Portio: Fine good bye then (exits) Shylock: Really? (Portia nods and everyone gasps.) Yes – I WIN!!! You have a really bad lawyer, Antonio. (Evil laugh.) Now I will collect my pound of flesh. (Shylock laughs.) Gratiano: Just give him the ring. Portia: Yes, go ahead and collect the pound of flesh, because that is the law. (Shylock goes to collect everyone gasps.) BUT you may not have anything else – no hair, no blood, just flesh. Shylock: But that’s impossible. Bassanio: Alright. Give him the ring. (Bassanio gives Gratiano the ring and exits) I hope my wife won’t notice. (Everyone exits.) Antonio: We’re getting near the end and we’re doing well for time. And now, Act 4, Scene 2 – a street in Venice. (Nerrisa and Portia enter first – then Gratiano.) Gratiano: Here is the ring. The Merchant of Venice also wants to have dinner with you. Portia: Then I guess you’re out of luck, aren’t ya? Shylock: Give me the money then. Portia: I will take the ring, but I have to rush home. Please, show my law clerk to Shylock’s house so that he will sign new documents. Then, law clerk, meet me so that we can leave. Portia: No, you take the original contract or not at all. And more than that – you have threatened a person’s life by asking for a pound of flesh. What is the punishment for that? Half your fortune, I believe. Gratiano: Okay. Duke: How about a fine instead. Portia: Or requiring that Shylock write his daughter back into his will as the sole heir. Shylock: Drat – I’m really ticked off about this. (he exits.) Antonio: Let me pay you for your work. Nerrisa: (aside to Portia) I’m going to get Gratiano to give me his ring too. (Portia and Nerrisa give each other a thumbs up.) Portia: Good luck. (They exit.) Antonio: This is the last scene. Act 5, Scene 1 – back in Belmont. I’m in this scene. It’s because I’m the Merchant of Venice and I need to be in the last scene, of course. (Jessica and Lorenzo enter.) 11 Jessica: I love you more. Portia: Or sure they did, I’ll bet you they gave it to two women. Lorenzo: I love you more. Bassanio and Gratiano: No. Jessica: No, I love you more. Portia and Nerrisa: Yes. (showing the rings) Lorenzo: No, I love you more. (Messenger enters.) Messenger: Portia is coming home. (Balthezar enters.) Balthezar: Bassanio is coming home. (Portia and Nerissa enters.) Portia: You did give them to two women, Nerrisa and I. We dressed as lawyers and traveled to Venice to save Antonio’s life. And it worked. Portia: Here we are. (Bassanio, Antonio, Solarino, Solanio and Gratiano enter.) Antonio: I certainly approve of your choice of wife, Bassanio. Thank you for saving my life. Well, I am the Merchant of Venice, and this is my play and I really like this ending. Bessanio: Here we are. Everyone: The end! Nerissa: Where is your ring, Gratiano? Antonio: What did you think? Did you like the ending? Gratiano: I gave it as a fee to a law clerk who helped Antonio. Children: Yes. Nerissa: You promised me that you would never take off your ring. I am very mad at you. Antonio: And I think we got it done in time, in 17 and a half minutes or less. Child # 1: I don’t know how long it took. Portia: Gratiano, that was terrible of you to give away such a precious gift. My husband would never have parted with the ring I gave him. Gratiano: Actually, Bassanio gave his ring away first to the lawyer who saved Antonio. Child # 2: Yeah, we enjoyed it so much, that we just lost track of time. Child # 3: Yeah. (Antonio goes off talking to the children about the play.) Portia: What? You have given your ring away? (he shows his hand and nods) You have wounded me to the heart. Your heart is as empty as your finger. Shall I be so unfaithful? Antonio: Please, forgive them. It was for a good cause and they gave it to good men.
