Ⅰ. Project Objective & Application Direction
1. Project Objective
◦ To acquire the original technology of polar research and to establish multilateral
network of international cooperation with the support of the Korea Polar Research
Institute’s state-of the-art infrastructure and research funds regarding creative
polar research themes for foreign researchers.
2. Application Direction
◦ To seek diversification of international scholar exchanges and cooperations
- To support for researches related to polar fields in a bottom-up method based on the
demand of international joint researches for foreign researchers
Ⅱ. Project Details
1. Budget Support: USD 130,000 per Each project
2. Support Field: Researches Related to Polar Fields
◦ Fields that contribute to the science and technology development in connection
with KOPRI’s research projects, or research themes that require joint researches
with foreign researchers
- The research project must jointly utilize the polar research infrastructure owned
by KOPRI

3. Qualification for Application
◦ A researcher under foreign scholarly research institutes and universities
(including affiliated research institutes)
◦ A researcher with doctor’s degree who is training at foreign institutes, including
universities
◦ A researcher who has published research results in academic journals of global
standard (SCI) after January 1, 2008

4. Support Type: Joint Research
The theme of research may be selected by the researcher, but it must be
a cooperative research implemented with a researcher of KOPRI
◦ Implement a joint research that includes researchers from foreign institute and
KOPRI
- Assign a researcher at KOPRI* to help utilize KOPRI’s infrastructure beforehand
- The assigned researcher from KOPRI will be responsible for cooperating with the
project being planned and implemented by the person in charge of the research

* If documentary evidence is not submitted, the applicant will be excluded from

a. Evaluation for stage 1: document evaluation
◦ Evaluation method: verify research results and calculate scores for research results
◦ Evaluation contents: evaluate whether or not satisfying the qualification outline in
the application guideline
b. Evaluation for stage 2: selection evaluation by KOPRI’s evaluation committee
◦ Evaluated by: heads of research departments and research teams
◦ Evaluation method: review research plan and give points according to evaluation
indicator

Ⅴ. Payment and Management of Research Fund
1. Method of Payment: pay to the institution of the person in charge of
the project
◦ Compilation of the budget for research funds being paid to joint foreign researchers
will follow the standard of budget formulation established by the institute employing
the person in charge of the project
◦ Remittance of research fund in full amounts after signing a separate agreement
with the institute employing foreign researcher (Calculation of research fund
will be substituted by submitting the report on the use of research fund)
2. Period of Payment: pay the research fund in full amount within 1
month after signing the agreement for research project
Ⅵ. Submission and Management of Research Outcome
1. Report of Research Result
◦ Submission due: within 3 months after finishing the research period
◦ Submission method: submitted by on-line (E-Mail) and mail
◦ Required documents for submission
- Article on research results (English, free-format)
- Summary document on research fund usage (designated format provided)
2. Post Management of Research Results
◦ Write down thanks to in the thesis produced from the research results
- Indicate that KOPRI’s fund was used

◦ Post management of the outcome produced from research results (intellectual
property right, etc.) will comply with the contents of agreement signed
concerning the applicable research project
3. Follow-up System for Research Results
◦ The researcher should provide the research products (thesis, books, various
reports, patents, technology inventions, contents of various media reports,
results of talent development, etc.) concerning the implementation of research
project to the Project Development & Management Team of KOPRI while
conducting the research, as well as after submitting the research results for
publication. In the case where there is a request for use by KOPRI, the
applicable research product should be sent to KOPRI
Ⅶ. Other Matters
◦ In the case where facts that are incorrect or false have been written during
application, the applicant will be disadvantaged. Also, even after being
selected, if false information has been found, the applicant will be cancelled
from selection
