Clinical Rotation Checklist | Instructor Version
The following checklist has been developed to facilitate clinical rotation requirements for Nursing Instructors
teaching at Palomar Health. Some sections will only apply to new, current and/or returning instructors. The
definitions below have been created to identify which section is most applicable for your rotation.



New: An instructor who is teaching a clinical rotation at Palomar Health for the first time.
Current: An Instructor who has taught a clinical rotation at Palomar Health within the past 12 months.
Returning: An Instructor who has not taught a clinical rotation at Palomar Health within the past 12 months.

PRE-CLINICAL ROTATION ACTIVITIES
1) Create an account at http://pphol.org learning account using Palomar Health online
account using full legal first and last name.

2) Complete Initial “Nursing Instructor Orientation Course.”
3) Complete Annual Clinical Care Modules:
 Annual Safety Training
 Acute Care VersaCare Bed (Palomar Medical Center Only)
 Accu-Chek Inform II Glucose Meter Competency (for rotations performing POCT only)
 Monitoring EtCO2 Opioid Delivery Module” (All Acute Care rotations only)
4) Review resources and forms on the “Nursing Instructor Orientation” home page–
Instructors. Click on hyperlink to access Academics at Palomar Health Nursing
Instructor Resources.

5) Schedule & attend Nursing Services Orientation (NSO). See schedule on “Nursing
Instructor Orientation” home page:
a. Email request to Academics@palomarhealth.org
b. Ensure School sends Academics your SSN in order to issue your Palomar
Health ID and badge.
6) Access Palomar Health’s online Clarity computer documentation training domain and
practice documentation. Open “Training” folder, select “T163A” folder and choose
application.
7) Work with school coordinator to ensure completion of “Student Orientation Record”
(SOR).
8) Contact Palomar Health Academics to arrange a unit tour/equipment review. Current
and returning instructors may request as needed.
9) Download the Accu-Chek Inform II Checklist and obtain sign off by the Unit Manager,
CNS or Educator during unit tour in order to complete perform Accu-Chek
competency.
10) Contact Academics 2 weeks before the start of your clinical rotation, to verify
students have completed their onboarding requirements.

11) Confirm with Academics 1 week prior, that all students and instructors have been
issued a Palomar Health ID # prior to clinical rotation start date.

FIRST CLINICAL STUDENT ORIENTATION DAY ACTIVITY LIST
Activity
All Instructors
1. Obtain Student and/or Instructor ID badges & parking stickers as needed.
2. Print copies of the Inform II Initial Training Checklist for each of your students.
3. Validate competency for each student. (Please note areas that state verbalize or
demonstrate). Scan and email Inform II Training Checklist to
Deborah.Mason@palomarhealth.org ID’s will be emailed to Instructor.
4. Perform a Quality Control (QC) Test (HI & Low) before using the Accu-Chek machine the first
time to avoid being locked out. All Instructors and students must perform a QC each
semester.
5. Review Alaris IV pumps & capnography monitoring for PCA with students (Only for Clinical
rotations utilizing equipment).
6. Review unit specific Standards of Care with Students (Lucidoc).
7. Train students on use of electronic documentation system (call HELP Desk at 858.613.4357
for assistance).
8. Demonstrate to students the use of the following:
 Lucidoc
 Clarity job aids
 Krames on Demand
 Mosby Nursing Consult
 Mosby Nursing Skills
o Reference for Bedside procedures
o Review “Restraint Free Environment, Use of Chair Alarm”
 Nursing IV Drug handbook
 Micromedex
 Nutrition Care Manuals

9. Review Restraint Free environment: Use of “Chair Posey” with students (Lucidoc).

10. Introduce students to staff & complete unit tour.

11. Deliver a copy of the Palomar Health Nursing Student Float log to each float unit.
