McKinney ISD 11th Grade AP English Summer Reading May 2010 Dear Incoming 11th Grade Humanities III AP English Student and Parent or Guardian, Statistics prove continued reading improves test scores and increases student success. With this in mind, McKinney ISD requires a summer reading assignment for all 9th-12th grade PreAP, AP English and Humanities students. This assignment reflects the content and grade level while promoting skills critical to student success on the Advanced Placement exams. This year the 11th grade Humanities III AP teacher at McKinney Boyd High School has selected 1984 by George Orwell and The Wal-Mart Effect by Charles Fishman. In addition to the reading, students will be required to complete one writing assignment over the summer relative to both novels. Details about the assignment follow the text of this letter. The purpose of this assignment is to guide the students in their reading and understanding of the themes presented by the authors. Also, during the first week of school, students will take an objective assessment of the novels. If you or your child have any questions, please email Linda Mirro, teacher of 11th grade Advanced Placement Humanities III English (lmirro@mckinneyisd.net). As a district, McKinney ISD embraces the life-long love of reading; it is our goal to instill this in our students. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, The English Department of McKinney Boyd High School Reading Assignment The summer reading assignment for AP English Language and Composition this year consists of two books (one fiction and one non-fiction): 1984 by George Orwell and The Wal-Mart Effect by Charles Fishman. Though both books were written years apart, both books present similar themes. We strongly suggest students read 1984 first in order to understand the issues of government control. While reading each book, annotate for appropriate evidence to support the thesis and complete a writing assignment (listed below) over both readings. Also, expect an objective exam over both books the first week of school. Prompt: According to various social critics, “Wal-Mart is our big brother, controlling our lives by controlling our economy.” In a well-organized essay, defend, challenge, or qualify the validity of this view. Include evidence from your reading, observation, and/or experience to support your position. Essay Requirements: Using MLA format, the essay will be 3 full pages in length, doublespaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. No creative margins, fonts, or cover sheets. Write a well-argued, well-supported, formal argument essay. Must have a clear, strong thesis in the introduction. The body must contain 3 specific details from each text (cited in correct MLA format). Explain/discuss/argue how the text evidence you provide proves your thesis. Edit and proofread all work carefully. Essay is due the first day of school—Monday, August 23, 2010.
