What to Expect For Your Upcoming Colonoscopy What is a colonoscopy? Colonoscopy is a procedure performed at Three Rivers Medical Center for a variety of reasons. After you are given sedating medications, a small flexible tube is inserted into the rectum and advanced to the cecum and, on most occasions, the last portion of your small intestine. Why is colonoscopy performed? A colonoscopy is performed to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer. This is accomplished through the removal of colon cancer precursors called polyps. Colonoscopy also allows for the detection of colon cancer before you develop symptoms . Early detection means better survival. Colonoscopy can also be used to treat gastrointestinal bleeding or obstruction. Finally, it can be used to investigate causes of abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, anemia, changes in bowel habits, abnormal weight loss, and abnormal xray findings. How long will it take? Colonoscopy often takes only 15-30 minutes to perform! Occasionally, they may last up up to an hour. Is there any pain? Absolutely NOT Is the prep as bad as they say? There are multiple bowel preparations availble depending on patient’s personal medical history and insurance coverage. Dr. Frazier utilizes the “split-dose” approach which allows patients to half the prep and drink a smaller amounts at a time. This is more tolerable for patients and provides a cleaner colon for a high quality colonoscopy. Ultimately, no matter what prep is chosen, the end result is the same, we want to clean your entire colon out for a safe, quality examination. Making sure the prep is cold and using baby wipes can improve discomfort. Will I be naked or exposed? Absolutely NOT Are there complications with colonscopy? Yes, although rare, adverse events including perforation, bleeding, problems with sedation, and others can occur. This is one of the reasons to ensure your physician is properly trained and qualified to perform colonoscopy. Speak to Dr. Frazier about this for more details. What should I expect after the colonoscopy? The vast majority of patients have no symptoms and are able to resume normal duties after the colonoscopy. Because sedating medications are given, we do not recommend making major decisions, operating heavy machinery, or driving. YOU WILL NEED A DRIVER AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE. In your dischage instructions, there will be signs and symptoms of possible complications. Please read these and return to hospital if any concerns arise. When will I get the results? Dr Frazier will discuss preliminary results with you immediately after the procedure. If you would like, he can speak with your family. You will also recieve handouts with basic information about what was found. If biopsies or other studies are performed as part of your procedure, these often take 1-2 weeks to return. This information can be obtained during follow up or by calling his office.
