Call to Order: Craig Van Gelder called the meeting to order at 4:10 PM. 2. Noting of Minutes: Copies of the minutes for last year’s business meeting (June 16, 2012) were distributed and noted. 3. Secretary’s Report: Jay Moon discussed how the ASM has invested in the last few years to promote growth and greater involvement by the next generation of missiologists. We are thankful to see record attendance this year. Jay thanked Craig Van Gelder for delegating various duties to facilitate the smooth transition of this year’s conference at the new venue. Special thanks were given to Wilbert Shenk for the writing of the 40-year history of ASM, and copies were made available to those who desired one. 4. Financial Report: Treasurer, Duane Brown, handed out the financial report and described the major aspects. 5. Report from the Board of Publications: Phil Huber, Chairman of the Board of Publications provided a summary of the Board’s activities this year. 6. Dates and locations of future meetings: June 20-23, 2014 at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, MN; June 12-14, 2015 at either Northwestern or Wheaton. This date was changed since Northwestern is not available for the previous date. Representatives from Fuller Seminary indicated that they would not be able to attend the conference at the new date since their seminary is still in session (as well as any school on the quarter system). They requested that the Board of Directors re-consider the decision to move the date and return the conference date to the original time of June 19-21, 2015. 8. Update on the symposium: Craig Van Gelder thanked those who participated in the symposium and the parallel paper presentations. There were more proposals than spaces allocated for the presenters. The Board of Directors is still fine-tuning how best to incorporate what has been a relatively successful symposium into the full schedule of activities. 9. Recognition: Craig Van Gelder thanked everyone who assisted in the conference this year by listing each of their names to include: each member of the Board of Directors, Arun Jones (for taking minutes on Thursday and Friday), and Wilbert Shenk (for the 40 year history publication). 10. Introduction to the new President: Outgoing president, Craig Van Gelder, introduced the incoming ASM president, Bob Priest. Bob reminded us that a questionnaire was distributed to the ASM members three years ago that asked for topics/themes that should be discussed at the annual conference. Based on these results, the topic for next year’s conference is “Contextualization.” Bob invited individuals or groups to submit proposals for the parallel sessions. To stimulate thinking, Bob noted some examples of possible proposal topics to include: Contextual preaching/arts/worship/theology, syncretism, gender/family/marriage, other religions, American churches, African-American churches, witchcraft, and prosperity theology. Bob encouraged practitioners, senior missiologists, and PhD students in their final stages of research to submit proposals. Bob also challenged students to do Pecha Kucha presentations in their classes and then submit a number of these to the ASM (this idea will be refined in the near future). 11. Remembrance of ASM members: Craig Van Gelder asked for names of ASM members that passed away this year. The following names were offered: Dean Gilliland, Richard Twiss, Justice Anderson, Richard Druman, Steve Strauss, Don Phillips, and Joe Donders. 12. Other Business: Craig Van Gelder was publicly thanked for his leadership in this year’s conference. The first annual ASM book of the year award was announced. The first recipient of the award is Stan Skreslet for his book, “Comprehending Mission: The Questions, Methods, Themes, Problems, and prospects of Missiology.” 13. The meeting adjourned at 5 PM. Respectfully submitted: W. Jay Moon, Secretary-Treasurer Authorized for Distribution: Craig Van Gelder, President Bob Priest, 1st Vice-President
