“Chosen” 1 Peter 2:9

Over the last 21 years Gospel Heritage has evolved to become a significant influence within the Kingdom that
develops leaders in the area of worship. Our focus on empowering and equipping persons for the Kingdom of
God is paramount and necessary for the advancement of the mission of Jesus Christ in the 21st Century.
This year's theme, "CHOSEN" from 1 Peter 2:9, will continue to promote the focus of Gospel Heritage
which is to transform and equip the Body of Christ for service. It is important to note that the ideal of being
CHOSEN is not new to the Christian faith. In fact from the beginning of creation, being CHOSEN has been the
defining way that God has related to His creation. From Adam to now, God has CHOSEN humanity to live as
expressions and extensions of His image in the earth.
Being CHOSEN then begins with the willful and purposeful activity of God. This activity of
choosing or calling is supremely witnessed through Jesus Christ, the ultimate CHOSEN one. His life, as
according to John 6:38 was lived solely determined by God and his assignment was exclusively for the design
of God. This is vital to note because we who claim relationship with God now must embrace fully our
CHOSENESS through our faith in Jesus Christ, the CHOSEN of God. Our unique identity as CHOSEN now
rests in the fact that through Jesus Christ we exist and because of Jesus Christ we are now called into a
community of the CHOSEN as wonderfully depicted in 1 Peter 2:9.
The writer of Peter employs the Cultic language and images used to describe Israel in the Old
Testament. In doing this he attempts to reaffirm the connection between Israel and the Church. As Israel was
the CHOSEN as the vessel of God to a heathen world so, too, the Church is chosen to be the agent of
transformation of Jesus Christ to a world of sin. The writer defines then The Church as a consecrated, called
out, servant driven community whose assignment is to be a light in darkness.
The power of this light is that we the Church refuse to conform to culture but rather seeks to call culture
to the standard of Jesus Christ. What's key is that it rests on being CHOSEN.
What does it means to be CHOSEN?
I suggest that it means being intentionally created by God for a specific assignment and being
purposefully positioned to live out that assignment. The idea of being CHOSEN suggests that God, through
Jesus Christ has redeemed humanity for first relationship and then assignment.
As one strives then to live out this assignment or purpose there are 2 things important to note. One is
the character of the one CHOSEN and two is the preparedness of the one CHOSEN. Both are vital and one
who is CHOSEN must fully recognize this.
In 2016, GH will attempt to:
1. Define what it means to be CHOSEN
2. Provide a biblical interpretation of 1 Peter 2:9
3. Equip each attendee to effectively live “chosen”
4. Offer instruction on key areas within the church and how being CHOSEN impacts service.
