THE PROJECT STAR DATA SET The Project STAR public access data set contains data on test scores, treatment groups, and student and teacher characteristics for the four years of the experiment, from academic year 1985-86 to academic year 1988-89. The test score data analyzed in this chapter are the sum of the scores on the math and reading portion of the Stanford Achievement Test. The binary variable “Boy” in Table 11.2 indicates whether the student is a boy (= 1) or girl (= 0); the binary variables “Black” and “Race other than black or white” indicate the student’s race. The binary variable “Free lunch eligible” indicates whether the student is eligible for a free lunch during that school year. The teacher’s years of experience are the total years of experience of the teacher whom the student had in the grade for which the test data apply. The data set also indicates which school the student attended in a given year, making it possible to construct binary schoolspecific indicator variables. We have included two versions of the data set on the website. STAR_SW includes the variables that were used in the analysis in Chapter 11. WEBSTAR constains the complete dataset (which we downloaded from the Project STAR website http://www.heros-inc.org/star.htm) Data Series in STAR_SW: Variable tscorek tscore1 tscore2 tscore3 stark star1 star2 star3 sck sc1 sc2 sc3 rak ra1 ra2 ra3 black white boy freelunk freelun1 Description test score kindergarten test score 1st grade test score 2nd grade test score 3rd grade attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in kindergarten attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in 1st grade attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in 2nd grade attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in 3rd grade in small class - kindergarten in small class – 1st Grade in small class – 2nd Grade in small class – 3rd Grade in regular class with aide – kindergarten in regular class with aide – 1st grade in regular class with aide – 2nd grade in regular class with aide – 3rd grade binary variable (1 if black) binary variance (1 if white) binary variable (1 if boy) qualifies for free lunch kindergarten qualifies for free lunch 1st grade freelun2 freelun3 totexpk totexp1 totexp2 totexp3 treadssk treadss1 treadss2 treadss3 tmathssk tmathss1 tmathss2 tmathss3 schidkn schid1n schid2n schid3n qualifies for free lunch 2nd grade qualifies for free lunch 3rd grade years of total teaching experience - kindergarten years of total teaching experience - 1st grade years of total teaching experience - 2nd grade years of total teaching experience - 3rd grade total reading scaled score - sesat ii stanford kindergarten total reading scaled score - sesat ii Stanford 1st grade total reading scaled score - sesat ii stanford 2nd grade total reading scaled score - sesat ii Stanford 3rd grade total math scaled score - sesat ii Stanford kindergarten total math scaled score - sesat ii Stanford 1st grade total math scaled score - sesat ii Stanford 2nd grade total math scaled score - sesat ii Stanford 3rd grade school id-k (new) kindergarten school id-g1 (new) 1st grade school id-g2 (new) 2nd grade school id-g3 (new) 3rd grade Data Series in WEBSTAR Variable newid ssex srace sbirthq sbirthy stark star1 star2 star3 cltypek cltype1 cltype2 cltype3 schtypek hdegk cladk totexpk tracek treadssk tmathssk sesk Description new student id for public star datasets student sex (1m2f) student race (1w2b3a4h5i6o) quarter of students birth year of students birth attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in kindergarten attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in 1st grade attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in 2nd grade attend project star class (small, regular or aide) in 3rd grade classroom type (1s2r3ra) in kindergarten classroom type (1s2r3ra) in first grade classroom type (1s2r3ra) in second grade classroom type (1s2r3ra) in third grade school type - (1i2s3r4u) in kindergarten highest degree (tch) of kindergarten teacher teacher career ladder level in kindergarten years of total teaching experience - kindergarten teacher race (1w2b3a4h5i6o) in kindergarten total reading scaled score - sesat ii stanford total math scaled score - sesat ii stanford socio-economic status in kindergarten schtype1 trace1 hdeg1 clad1 totexp1 treadss1 tmathss1 ses1 schtype2 trace2 hdeg2 clad2 totexp2 treadss2 tmathss2 ses2 schtype3 treadss3 tmathss3 ses3 trace3 hdeg3 clad3 totexp3 sysidkn sysid1n sysid2n sysid3n schidkn schid1n schid2n schid3n school type - (1i2s3r4u) in first grade teacher race (1w2b3a4h5i6o) in 1st grade highest degree (tch) of 1st grade teacher teacher career ladder level in 1st grade years of total teaching experience - 1st grade total reading scaled score - primary 1 stanford total math scaled score - primary 1 stanford socio-economic status in 1st grade school type - (1i2s3r4u) in 2nd grade teacher race (1w2b3a4h5i6o) in 2nd grade highest degree (tch) of 2nd grade teacher teacher career ladder level in 2nd grade years of total teaching experience - 2nd grade total reading scaled score - primary 2 stanford total math scaled score - primary 2 stanford socio-economic status in 2nd grade school type - (1i2s3r4u) in third grade total reading scaled score - primary 3 stanford total math scaled score - primary 3 stanford socio-economic status in 3rd grade teacher race (1w2b3a4h5i6o) in 3rd grade highest degree (tch) of 3rd grade teacher teacher career ladder level in 3rd grade years of total teaching experience - 3rd grade sch system id-k (new) kindergarten sch system id-g1 (new) 1st grade sch system id-g2 (new) 2nd grade sch system id-g3 (new) 3rd grade school id-k (new) kindergarten school id-g1 (new) 1st grade school id-g2 (new) 2nd grade school id-g3 (new) 3rd grade
