Energy and Water Efficiency (16th Nov – 11th Dec)
Encouraging staff, students and visitors to think about their energy and water use, make positive
steps to reduce their environmental impacts and promote the energy and water efficiency work the
University is doing.
Level 1 (Large Brown or Green Leaves ×4)
Each week you will receive an email with information about energy and/or water
efficiency and related University initiatives. In order to earn your leaf stickers, all we ask is
that you circulate this information around the school/department. This can be via email,
verbally in team meetings or by placing print outs in prominent places such as the kitchen
and notice boards.
w/c 16th November – The size of the problem. Why is this issue so important?
w/c 23rd November – Energy Use v’s Emissions. How do we monitor this?
w/c 30th November – Water efficiency. The issue and the solutions
w/c 7th December – Meeting the 80% challenge. How can the UK achieve an 80% carbon reduction
by 2050?
Level 2 (Small green leaves ×8)
Each theme has 8 theme specific actions for your office, department or school to
complete. Each action is worth one leaf.
1. At least 1 member of the school/department attended the Green15 launch event in October and
visited the Energy and Water Efficiency table
2. The department has taken action to encourage all staff to switch off their computer monitors
overnight and during lunch breaks. This can be in the form of stickers, email reminders, verbal
reminders and physical checks
3. All staff have reviewed and optimised the energy saving modes on their PCs to best reflect their
working practices.
4. The team has a plan in place to ensure all equipment is turned off during University closure
periods and can demonstrate that this has been followed
5. The team has conducted a water efficiency walk-through of the building. All faults/leaks have
been reported and water efficiency awareness posters and stickers put up.
6. All thermostatic radiator valves have been set to the mid-point (2-3)
7. There are no personal kettles, fridges, microwaves, printers, personal heaters and desk fans in
use. Staff have been made aware of the University's policy on personal equipment and are
regularly reminded.
8. The team has registered and taken part in the University's Blackout weekend event. More
details on this event will be provided nearer the time.
Level 3 (Animal sticker – your choice)
The final level is about using your initiative and coming up with your own way of
raising awareness or taking positive action. It is up to you what you do, it need not
be a grand event, even simple ideas can have positive results.
