Road to Revolution Historical Timeline

(Cause and Effect)

Purpose: The purpose of this project is twofold; to become familiar with important dates and events leading up to the American Revolution, as well as to evaluate these events and create a thesis around,

“What caused the Revolutionary War?”

What you will be doing/need to have done: You are going to create a timeline upon which you will place the following events at their appropriate dates, with their description/definition, historical importance/significance, and relevant image. You also need to create a thesis that is supported (for the most part) throughout your timeline. It does not need to be in every point on the timeline, but it should be apparent throughout. Remember, history is not random facts grouped together. You must make sure that there is a thread that connects these events. There are various ways to do this, and perhaps one of the easiest is to place the events into particular categories, e.g. laws to save money, laws to punish, actions of rebellion, etc.

Please be as accurate as possible in all areas of your timeline. You will be graded based on the rubric on the reverse of this sheet. This project will count in the “Project” category of the gradebook, which accounts for 10% of your overall 9 weeks grade.

YOU ARE NOT TO USE WIKIPEDIA – doing so will result in a loss of points. You should also have a works cited page on the backside of your timeline if doing a poster, or a dedicated slide for works cited if doing a PowerPoint/Prezi.

Road to Revolution Historical Timeline

(End Project)

What a good project looks like: This project can be turned in one of two ways:

1) A standard poster-board sized project (no tri-Folds) meeting all of the requirements listed above

Or

2) A Power Point/Prezi presentation which will be submitted electronically, also meeting all of the requirements listed above. If you choose this option, you should have one event per slide.

Thesis:

There is a continuing argument over what caused the American Revolution, whether it was unfair taxation by the King, selfishness on the part of the colonists, or other assorted reasons. As we go through this unit, you will have a better understanding of this argument. For your poster, you need to develop a clear thesis as to what you believe caused the American Revolution. That thesis needs to be clearly evident in your poster/presentation, and your description of most of the events listed above should

Presentation:

No matter which project you decide to do, the poster or Slides, it should be visually appealing and easy to read. I suggest that since space will be somewhat limited, you avoid excessive artwork other than the image required for each event on the time line. While visual appeal is necessary, it is not a graded aspect of this assignment. However, only visually appealing classwork will be displayed in class. Typing may also help you fit information on the posters while still keeping it legible.

Important Dates:

Assigned: November 3, 2015.

Due: November 20 th

, 2015. Any project not turned in by this date will receive a grade of zero.

If it is turned in after Thanksgiving break, but still within the late work window, I will change the grade accordingly.

Road to Revolution Rubric

Image:

1pt - appropriate image

0pt – Fails to add image, or image is not relevant to that specific text

Date:

1pt – Gives the day, month, year as accurately as possible. This means it is given at its most narrowed down level as possible.

0pt – Fails to give the date; gives it incorrectly; or is not the most accurate date for that event.

Description/Significance:

3pts – Description is accurate, thorough, and comprehensive. Historical significance is given and is accurate and relevant.

1-2 pts – Description is lacking because of only one of the following: some minor errors, lacks some minor details, significance seems to show a lack of comprehension of true relevance to the American

Revolution, but is in the “ballpark.”

0 pts – Fails to attempt to supply a description or significance, or is grossly inaccurate in either category.

Thesis:

10 pts: A sound thesis is created and is supported throughout the timeline.

5 pts: Thesis is there, but is lacking at obvious events.

0 pts: Fails to incorporate thesis.
