University of Maryland Veterans Scholarships Application
2012-2013
The University of Maryland, College Park is dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for Veterans and
active duty service members. The UMCP Veterans Initiative scholarships will provide support for Veteran students
to have the opportunity to pursue educational goals. They are intended to cover direct study-related expenses
such as tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Scholarships are for one year with the opportunity for current
recipients to reapply in subsequent years (with the exception of the Tillman Scholarships).
Scholarship Opportunities Available to Veterans, National Guard Reservists and Active Duty
Servicemembers
The University of Maryland Veterans Initiative Scholarships provide financial assistance to students who are
Veterans of US military service, who have demonstrated financial need, and have shown career ambitions and/or a
demonstration of service to others in the community. The following scholarships are currently open for Fall 2012
Veteran applicants. All applicants must be Veterans, Active Duty Servicemembers or National Guard Reservists.

Alexion Veterans Scholarship was established by Perry ’87 and Rachelle Alexion. It is open to full-time
undergraduate students; there is one scholarship for $2000.

Paul E. and Jane F. Butler Scholarship was established by Terry Butler ‘93 and Nancy Morris Butler ’80 in
honor of Terry’s parents. The scholarship is open to qualified, undergraduate full-time students of the
Robert H. Smith School of Business; there is one scholarship for $1000.

Robert E. Evasick Memorial Scholarship was established by Paul and Charlotte Evasick in memory of
Robert E. Evasick. It is open to full- or part-time undergraduate students; there is one scholarship for
$1000.

First Command Family Scholarship was created by the First Command Financial Services Office in
Arlington, Virginia as a way to support the educational goals of military families. The scholarship, which is
available to Veterans and active duty military as well as their spouses and children, will award an annual
amount of $2000.

Edward Friedson Memorial Scholarship was established by Edward Friedson’s family members. It is open
to full-time undergraduate or graduate students; there is one scholarship for $1000.

William and Donna Richbourg Veteran Scholarships were established by William and Donna Richbourg in
honor of their fathers. It is open to full-time undergraduate students; there is one scholarship for $2000.

Vincent Family Veterans Scholarship was established in honor of Robert J. Vincent, Ph.D by Robert ’82
and Tracy Vincent ’84 to support a deserving combat Veteran completing their post secondary education;
there is one scholarship for $1000.

Ernest M. Willcher Veterans Scholarship was established in loving memory of Ernest, ’61 by his wife
Shirley and sons Ben, ‘03 and Joel, ‘06 to support Veteran students at the University of Maryland, College
Park; there are currently two scholarships for $3000 each.

University of Maryland Veterans Scholarship is supported by alumni and friends of the University of
Maryland, College Park. It is open to part- and full-time undergraduate or graduate students; there are
several scholarships of $1000.
Scholarship Opportunities Available to Veterans, National Guard Reservists, Active Duty
Servicemembers and their Spouses


The Pat Tillman Foundation in partnership with the University of Maryland, College Park, provides
scholarships for Veterans and their spouses. The Tillman Military Scholars at the University of Maryland
was established in 2009 by the Pat Tillman Foundation. It is open to full-time undergraduate, graduate or
post-graduate servicemembers and their spouses. There are multiple scholarships with amounts varying
according to need. Please complete the application attached in order to be considered for a University of
Maryland Tillman Military Scholarship. More information about the Pat Tillman Foundation application
process can be found at their website: http://www.pattillmanfoundation.org/tillman-militaryscholars/apply/). Applicants endorsed by the University of Maryland are required to submit an
application through the general application process and will be required to interview with Maryland staff.

Scholarship Opportunities Available to Veteran Family Members and Spouses


The University of Maryland Veterans Family Scholarship was created in 2012 to meet the growing need
for financial support to dependents of active and Veteran servicemember families. An annual scholarship
of $1000 is available to dependents (children/spouses) of Veterans or active duty personnel who are
pursuing their academic degrees full or part time at the University of Maryland College Park. Applicants
need to demonstrate financial need and service to others in the community.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
Who is eligible to apply for the University of Maryland (note different eligibility requirements for Tillman)
scholarships?
Veterans, Active member servicemembers and National Guard reservists (and spouses for Tillman Scholarship
and dependents for UM Veteran Dependent Scholarships) who:

Wish to start, finish, or further their education at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Have served in active duty or reserve capacity for any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or National Guard.

Have exhausted all government benefits or cannot meet total need while utilizing all government
benefits.

Are registered full- or part-time at UM and are pursuing undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate
degrees.

Dependents are eligible to apply for the new University of Maryland Veterans Dependent Scholarships.
What criteria will be considered for awarding a Veterans scholarship?

Unmet financial need as demonstrated through FAFSA

Educational and career ambitions

Record of personal achievement
Applicants will be considered for all scholarships for which they are qualified. Application and all supporting
materials must be received by March 1, 2012. Applications can be sent via regular mail to: University of

Tillman Military Scholars Application Information
The Pat Tillman Foundation is dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for servicemembers and their
spouses. Veteran and active duty servicemembers and their spouses portray the very nature of leadership that the
Foundation seeks to inspire in young people across the country. With these scholarships, we are ensuring these
leaders have every opportunity to pursue broader educational goals.
Who is eligible to apply to be a Tillman Military Scholar?
 Veteran and active duty military servicemembers
o both pre- and post-9/11 service
o Servicemembers of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps,
Coast Guard, including National Guard, and Reserve
 Servicemember or spouse seeking assistance to pursue an undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate
degree at a public or private 4-year U.S. based accredited institution
 Spouses of active or Veteran servicemembers
o Including surviving spouses
What criteria will be considered for awarding the Tillman Military Scholarships?
 Educational and career ambitions
 Record of military service (or service as a spouse); motivation for serving
 Record of personal achievement
 Demonstration of service to others in the community
 Desire to continue to serve others and make a positive impact on your community

Compelling, thoughtful, genuine and thorough essay question responses
The same documents are required for any of the Veteran scholarships.
Renewability for Tillman Scholarships: Annual renewability will be considered for most scholarships based on
expected graduation date, proof of full-time student status, minimum 3.0 GPA earned, Tillman Community
engagement (virtually and in-person), documented participation in service, accountability for use of scholarship
funds and completion of Foundation surveys.
All criteria must be met in order to be renewed. Review of renewal status is conducted each June by the Pat
Tillman Foundation.
Tillman Military Scholars are expected to maintain full-time enrollment in a U.S. accredited institution unless they
are assuming part-time status during the semester they will graduate.
Scholarship funding can only be used toward a single post-secondary degree.
