The Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education is pleased to announce the following series: Making Connections for Secondary Transition: 2012-13 Community of Practice This webinar series, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network and the Center for Rehabilitation Counseling Research & Education at the George Washington University, will examine Secondary Transition for students with disabilities as part of the broader picture of college and career readiness for all students. The series will address and connect several elements of effective transition planning, all of which help students to reach their post-secondary goals: December 7, 2012 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Students & Youth 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm - Parents Making Connections: Self-Determination for Youth in Transition Building youth self-advocacy is a critical component of effective transition programs. No matter what their post-secondary goals are, youth with disabilities need to be able to identify their unique strengths and needs, accept their disabilities, set goals (selfdetermination), and advocate for the supports and accommodations that they need to be successful (self-advocacy). Educators, parents, agency providers, and youth themselves each play a unique role in the development of self-advocacy and selfdetermination skills. January 30, 2013 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Students & Youth 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm - Parents Making Connections: Transition and Universal Design for Learning Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an instructional approach that provides multiple avenues for students to access the general education curriculum. Based on the principles of architectural design, UDL considers the variations in student learning preferences before designing instruction, rather than "retrofitting" instruction to accommodate student diversity. UDL is a foundational component of a three-tiered model of college and career readiness for all students. UDL offers unique opportunities to support students with disabilities, both inside and outside the classroom. March 22, 2013 10:00 am - 11:00 am - Students & Youth 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm - Parents Making Connections: Accommodations that Support Transition For students with disabilities, accommodations and specially designed instruction are gateways to success in a rigorous general education curriculum. Yet educators, parents, and students frequently struggle to identify the most effective accommodations. Aligning the supports provided during high school with the supports needed for post-secondary education or training, employment, and participation in the community is also challenging. This webinar session will examine the role of accommodations in an effective individualized transition program. Additionally, IEP team members will learn how to adjust these supports as students move closer to leaving high school, so that students are adequately prepared for life after high school.
