Beauty and the Beast
Audition packet
Dear Junior High Student,
Thank you so much for your interest in Beauty and the Beast, I am looking forward to working on this play with you!
Please use this packet to help you prepare for your audition. You will find a synopsis of the play, a CD (please see
more info about this on the next page), along with a cast list and descriptions of all of the characters. This should be
helpful to you in deciding which roles you would like to audition for. Also, please feel free to ask me any questions.
Please note that there are several roles that can be cast in a non-traditional way. By this I mean that Belle’s Father
could be Belle’s Mother and roles like Cogsworth, Lefou and Chip can be played by a female as well as a male.
There is also a huge ensemble in which you will play villagers, enchanted objects in the castle, and wolves.
These are the leading roles in the play: Belle, Gaston, The Beast
These are the supporting roles that sing an entire song: Lefou, Lumière, Mrs. Potts, Maureen (Mother)
These are supporting roles that have solo parts in a song: Cogsworth, Chip, Babette, Madame de la Grande
Bouche, Monsieur D’Arque, 3 Silly Girls
Remember that leads must commit to being at all rehearsals. In the past these have been on Tuesday and
Thursday from 3:00-4:30 or 5:00 when we are in school and once or twice a week during the summer. There will also
be some evening dress rehearsals in November, as well as a brush up rehearsal between the performance weekends.
Summer vacation schedules will be taken into account when scheduling rehearsals for all involved. However, please
note that you are expected to attend rehearsals in the summer that you indicated you could. I realize it is summer
and plans change, but the schedule is based on the availability that you list on the form, so please make every effort to
be there when you have indicated that you could. It is very time consuming to repeatedly go back to re-teach
choreography and blocking.
After you have a chance to read this information, please think about and decide which role(s) you would like to
audition for. We will provide a packet for you with specific scenes and songs to look at in order for you to prepare
for your audition. Everyone that wants to be on stage must audition, even if you are auditioning for ensemble.
Everyone will need to sing and you will all be taught a dance. I will come in during your lunch time to teach you
some choreography that we will use for the auditions.
In order to cast all of these parts, we need to know how much you wish to be involved. While auditions will be for
one specific part, everyone who auditions will get some role with Mr. Lonneman and I putting people in the part we
feel best fits you.
Please complete the section on the last page and return it to Mr. Lonneman by Friday, February 27th. Auditions will
take place the week of April 12th. This will give you plenty of time to memorize the songs and learn the scenes.
Auditions will be held on April 16th and April 17th after school. Specific times will be announced as soon as
assigned. Please return this slip no later than Friday, February 27th and we will let you know when you can
pick up your audition packets.
Thank you,
Mrs. Lorenz

ACT I
Once upon a time in a faraway land, an Enchantress turns a cruel, unfeeling Prince into a hideous Beast. To break the
spell, the Beast must learn to love another and earn her love in return before the last petal falls from an enchanted
rose.
Ten years later, in a small village far below the Beast's castle, a beautiful and intelligent young woman, Belle, yearns
for something more than her provincial life ("Belle"). Belle is not oblivious to her peers’ views of her. She voices her
concerns about it to her father, Maurice, an eccentric inventor. He assures his daughter that she is anything but strange
(“No Matter What”). Maurice heads off to an invention fair donning a scarf knitted for him by Belle (“No Matter
What (Reprise)”). In the woods, Maurice becomes lost when a pack of wolves attacks him; he finds his way to a
mysterious castle on the edge of the Crossroads and enters. The servants of the castle include Lumière, a maître d'
turned into a candelabra, Cogsworth, the head of household turned into a clock, Babette, a maid turned into a feather
duster that still seems to retain her flirtatious tendencies, Mrs. Potts, the head of the kitchen turned into a tea pot, and
Chip, the son of Mrs. Potts. They welcome him, but the horrid Beast arrives and orders Maurice to be locked away in
the dungeon for trespassing.
Back in town, Gaston proposes to Belle, which she politely rejects (“Me”). Appalled by Gaston’s forwardness, Belle
once again voices her need for a life outside this provincial one (“Belle (Reprise)”). Then Belle sees Gaston's
sidekick Lefou wearing her father's scarf, Belle runs off to search for him. Belle finds her missing father at the castle
and offers herself in exchange for his freedom. The Beast agrees, sends Maurice back to the village, and escorts Belle
to her bedroom, where she considers what she has done ("Home"). Seeing their guest forlorn, Mrs. Potts and Madame
de la Grande Bouch comfort Belle ("Home - Tag").
In the village tavern, Lefou and the Villagers try to lift Gaston's spirits ("Gaston"). When "crazy old" Maurice barges
in claiming that he has seen a Beast, Gaston and Lefou form a plan to win Belle ("Gaston - Reprise"). At the castle,
the Servants coach the Beast on how to act like a gentleman. When Belle refuses to accept the Beast's invitation to
dinner, he loses his temper and tells her to starve. However, Lumière and the Servants offer Belle an extravagant feast
anyway ("Be Our Guest"). While Cogsworth gives Belle a tour of the castle, she wanders off into the forbidden West
Wing. The Beast discovers her there and explodes, which causes the frightened Belle to flee the castle. Realizing his
deadly mistake, the Beast knows he will be a monster forever if he cannot learn to love her (“If I Can’t Love Her”).
ACT II
In the forest, Belle is attacked by wolves. The Beast saves her but is injured in the process. Instead of leaving the
Beast and running home, Belle as a change of heart, and helps the Beast back to the castle and dresses his wounds.
The Servants recognize something different between Belle and the Beast ("Something There") and express their hope
that the spell may soon be broken ("Human Again").
Back in the village, Gaston meets with the asylum owner Monsieur D’Arque. They plan to lock Maurice away to
blackmail Belle into marrying Gaston (“Maison des Lunes”).
In the castle, the Beast and Belle attend a lovely dinner and personal ball, where they dance together in the ballroom
("Beauty and the Beast"). Despite this new friendship, Belle longs to see her father. Using the Beast's magic mirror,
Belle sees that Maurice is in trouble, so the Beast lets her go. Belle finds Maurice in the forest and takes him home to
the village, where Gaston has arranged for Monsieur D'Arque to take him to the lunatic asylum. Belle proves that her
father is not crazy by showing the Beast in the Magic Mirror.

Jealous of Belle's affection for someone else, Gaston whips the Villagers into a frenzy to storm the castle and kill the
Beast ("The Mob Song"). While the Servants defend the castle from the Villagers' attack, Gaston confronts and stabs
the Beast in the West Wing, then runs away in shame when the Beast refuses to kill him. Belle arrives and holds the
dying Beast in her arms ("Home - Reprise"), while her weeping breaks the spell. The Beast transforms back into the
Prince, the Servants become human again, and they all live happily ever after ("Transformation/Finale").

Character Description
Beast/Prince
A Prince transformed into a terrifying beast for his lack of compassion; hot-tempered and
commanding, but with a warm, loving heart buried far beneath his gruff exterior. He has an
extreme number of emotions as he is a dictator, a hurt child, a hero, a defender and a smitten
prince.
Belle
A vibrant, intelligent young beauty who wants much more than her provincial life. Belle needs to
be able to stand up to Gaston (and the Beast!) as well as those who don’t seem to understand her,
while being able to show compassion for her father, the Servants, and eventually the Beast.
Gaston
The vain, egotistical, narcissistic, ultra-masculine villain determined to marry Belle. He is
pompous and dim-witted and will do whatever it takes to win Belle’s hand. Gaston has all the
confidence in the world, but lacks the humility to balance it.
Lumière
A suave, French, debonair enchanted candelabra. The valet of the castle. He is self-confident and
charming. He has a never-ending give-and-take with Cogsworth. Lumière should “light up” the
stage in “Be Our Guest.” This role covers a range of emotions (from charming entertainer to brave
soldier). Try a French accent!
Mrs. Potts
A warm-hearted, maternal enchanted teapot. The cook of the castle.
Beauty and the Beast
Audition packet
Babette
A saucy, enchanted feather-duster and the object of Lumière’s affections. The chamber maid of the
castle. She misses the finer things in life as well as just being a girl. Babette is happy to be at
Belle’s service at a moment’s notice, but her true heart comes through in “Human Again.”
Madame de la
Grande Bouche
A former opera diva turned into an enchanted wardrobe. Madame is almost larger than life in
everything she does, including her singing and dancing. She is the ultimate “diva with a heart.”
Cogsworth
A tightly-wound, enchanted stuffy mantle clock and the head of the Beast’s household. The butler
of the castle. He, like all of the castle’s Servants, shows a fatherly compassion for Belle yet is
perfectly submissive to their master, the Beast. Cogsworth has two sides – he is a wee bit of a baby
at times yet has no problem “getting into it” with Lumière. Can try a British accent.
Maurice
Belle’s loving, eccentric inventor father/mother. He is adoring and protective father of Belle.
He/she should have fun interpreting this “crazy old man” while conveying some very strong
emotions: fear and fatherly love!
Chip
An enchanted teacup and Mrs. Potts' little boy/girl.
Monsieur
D’Arque
The creepy, scheming proprietor of the local insane asylum, the Maison des Lunes.
Lefou
Gaston’s bumbling, dim-witted, toady sidekick.
Silly Girls
They are in love with Gaston and will do almost anything just to be near him.
