GEORGETOWN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Minutes: October 8, 2015 PRESENT: Karren Cowing, Ole Jaeger, David Polito, Sharon Trabona, Geoff Birdsall, Selectmen representative, and Jim Coombs, Transfer Station manager. MINUTES: The August 2015 minutes were not available for review. FISCAL: Ole Jaeger reported that $26,689 has been expended since July 1, 2015 for solid waste disposal. Jim Coombs reported that he needs new safety glasses. Sharon Trabona moved to purchase prescription safety glasses for Jim Coombs and Jim Brown. Ole seconded the motion. Jim Coombs has an estimate for $190 for his glasses. David Polito amended the motion to purchase safety glasses for two employees who currently wear prescription glasses “not to exceed $250” per pair. Ole suggested that the motion be amended to “the Town will purchase prescription safety glasses for any employee at the Transfer Station not to exceed $250 per pair. The motion, as amended, was passed unanimously. OPERATIONS: Jim reported that Barry Fake is not available for employment this winter. At this point Dave VanBrunt is currently working Saturdays and Sundays through December. Jim Brown is working Wednesdays and substituting, as needed. Nathan Rubin occasionally will be available when he is home from college. However, at least one additional employee is needed, particularly after December. The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection went well. Alison Freeman, Georgetown’s representative to the HHW Collection, told Jim there were a number of no shows from Georgetown. Paint manufacturers will now be accepting leftover latex and oil-based paints. Roger’s Hardware is the local hardware store accepting this paint. Paintcare.org is a website with information on this new program. During 2015 Georgetown recycled 63.4 tons of metal and donated 2525 pounds of clothes to Goodwill. Ole presented price quotations for a compactor container. The estimate for a square heavy-duty 40-cubic yard container is $8000. There is an octagonal container, but he does not have a price for it yet. Reuse, and reduce, recycle. Remember recycling and discarding less saves tax dollars. David suggested Jim have a meeting with Charlie Collins, Road Commissioner, prior to winter weather beginning to plan for snow removal at the Transfer Station. OTHER: Ole is currently working on completing the DEP Annual Report. NEXT MEETING: The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 7:00 PM. Setting the 2016 calendar will be on the agenda. Respectfully submitted, Karren Cowing Cc: Solid Waste Management Committee members, Selectmen, Town Office
