E-Newsletter “Diversity ­­ a thought, not an afterthought; an action, not a reaction.” -Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion SPOTLIGHT IUPUI RECEIVES INSIGHT INTO DIVERSITY 2015 HIGHER EDUCATION EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY (HEED) AWARD On September 15, 2015, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) received the 2015 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — IUPUI will be featured, along with 91 other recipients, including Indiana University Bloomington, in the November 2015 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This is the 4 th consecutive year IUPUI has been named as a HEED Award recipient. INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected IUPUI through a rigorous application process in which the campus demonstrated a continued commitment to enhancing diversity and community engagement—two key aspects included in IUPUI’s strategic plan and noted in its mission and vision statements. Multiple initiatives were cited as contributing to IUPUI’s receipt of the HEED award including a thriving Multicultural Center with inclusive programming, the presence of the Adaptive Educational Services Office, the convening of the Chancellor’s Diversity Cabinet and the introduction of a new LGBTQ Student Services Center in spring 2016. La Plaza is a local organization that serves as the trusted liaison between Latinos and the larger Indianapolis community. La Plaza is in need of Hispanic/Latin@ food items and Paws Pantry is need of various proteins (canned meats, peanut butter, etc.) and Gluten free and vegetarian options. SpeakOUT Café presents: Poetry with a Purpose featuring Michael Reyes September 29, 2015; 6pm in CE 409 This workshop will help participants understand the tradition of the spoken word and its historical use. We will visit some the greatest poets, focusing on people of color and women. You will find your voice and experiment with different forms and themes of poetry. Participants will develop their own themes and create poems through workshops, discussion and creative writing exercises with a focus on social justice and poetry as a tool for organizing. This series will end with a poetry open mic for all to share their work. The position requires the candidate to assist in developing established or new cultural heritage digital collections. The student will participate in selecting items to be digitized, digitizing potentially fragile material, learning and utilizing a content management system, and describing historic items. In addition this position requires the student to build/maintain good working relationships with the community partners to which the historic content belongs. This may include working at the community partner’s physical location. Duties include: Collaborating with community partners to select material to be digitizedConverting print and image collections into digitized formats Digital file renaming, manipulation, and clean-up Organizing/uploading digitally rendered and born-digital files into content management systemsCollaborating with community partners to describe items using standardized metadata Facilitating digital object organization and discovery within content management systems and beyond Required qualifications: Pursuing a bachelor’s degree at IUPUI with class standing of sophomore, junior, or senior; an interest in promoting diversity on campus and beyond. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail and an ability to work in a team-based environment are highly desirable. Preferred qualifications: This would be an ideal opportunity for a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in History, Public History, Informatics or considering graduate degrees in those areas or Library Science. Knowledge of digitization processes, standards, and software tools such as Photoshop. One-year commitment is preferred. Internship credit can be earned for this position if needed. National Geographic Sacred Journeys at the Children’s Museum Aug. 29, 2015–Feb. 21, 2016 Each year, more than 330 million people around the world journey to a sacred place. Through awe-inspiring environments created with National Geographic photography, visitors can observe, discuss, and understand the sacred journeys made by people around the world. Featured sites include the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the Great Mosque in Mecca, and the Ganges River in India. Artifacts from a variety of faith traditions enrich the experience, including fragments of the Dead Sea scrolls, a throne built for the Dalai Lama, a piece of a Kiswah—the fabric that covers the Kaaba in the Great Mosque in Mecca, and a pamphlet written by Martin Luther.
