All 4 Math in Early Childhood (For OCCD website) All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 1: Understanding Number and Operations The more intentional and focused support young children receive around math knowledge and skill development - the greater their understanding and skill in math will be. Participants will be introduced to the foundations of math knowledge and skills from birth-to-five, and gain an understanding of how children learn about number and operations. Participants will become aware of ways to promote children’s knowledge of number and children's skills in using math as part of everyday experiences. Set One; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 2.5 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 2: The Basics of Geometry and Spatial Sense Exposure matters! When young children have opportunities for hands on play and exploration, and adults use “math talk” throughout the day, children gain greater math knowledge and skills. In this training, participants will be introduced to the foundations of geometry and spatial sense which are developing in young children, birth-to-five. Participants will become aware of ways to promote children’s knowledge of geometry and spatial sense and their skills in using math throughout the day. Set One; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 2 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 3: The Beginnings of Patterns, Measurement and Comparison In this training, participants will gain an understanding of how young children develop math knowledge and skills in the areas of patterns, measurement and comparison. The session will also introduce a variety of ways to promote children’s understanding of, and skills with, patterns, measurement and comparison. Set One; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 2.5 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 4: Exploring Number and Operations The more intentional and focused support young children receive around math knowledge and skill development - the greater their understanding and abilities will be. This session will examine in depth the ways in which children develop their understanding of number and operations. Participants will examine specific strategies to enhance their learning environments in order to promote children’s knowledge and skill in the area of number and operations. Set Two; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 3 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 5: Strategies for Geometry In this session, participants will explore child development, from birth-to-five, in the areas of geometry and spatial sense. The workshop will include an exploration of ways to apply specific strategies to learning environments in order to promote children’s understanding of geometry and spatial sense and their ability to manipulate shapes. Set Two; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 2 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 6: Developing Spatial Sense The ability to manipulate shapes and understand how personal and space boundaries function in society is an important math skill for young children to master. Participants in this session will explore how children develop spatial sense and their ability to manipulate shapes from birth through age five. The session will include strategies to enhance learning environments in order to provide optimal opportunities for children to learn how to manipulate shapes and develop spatial sense. Set Two; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 2 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 7: Developing Strategies for Measurement and Comparison In this session, participants will explore child development, from birth-to-five, in the areas of measurement and comparison. Participants will examine ways to apply information from the session to their learning environments in order to promote the ability of young children to understand measurement and comparison. Set Two; Core Knowledge Category: Learning Environments and Curriculum; 2.5 hours; Infant/Toddler, Preschool All 4 Math in Early Childhood Session 8: Let’s Implement Pattern Activities In this session, participants will explore child development, from birth-to-five, in the area of patterns. Participants will also examine ways to apply session content in order to enhance learning environments. Come and strategize around ways to promote children’s abilities to recognize patterns and sequences and develop and practice the critical thinking skills needed to predict and classify objects in a pattern.
