To the Resident
Foreshore Weed Control- July 2015–June 2016
Kingston’s Natural Resource Area (NRA) Team is responsible for undertaking weed works throughout the year to
manage the vegetation on the foreshore reserve. The NRA team follows an Annual Works Program which is
designed to execute effective management of the foreshore’s ecosystem for the benefit of all users. Please find
information on when/where weed control works will be undertaken over the page.
Please note that in order to improve efficiency and reduce paper usage, future weed control schedules
will only be available via the Foreshore Page of Kingston’s Website
(http://www.kingston.vic.gov.au/Home)
Weed Control
Weeds are a problem in Kingston’s foreshore reserve. Weeds are introduced plants that compete with
indigenous (locally native) plants for light, space and other resources. Left uncontrolled they would cover the
foreshore, smother other plants and can be dangerous to beach users. Weed control works are undertaken on
selected sites throughout the foreshore reserve as required.
Grassy Weed Control
Spraying of Grassy Weeds
The weeds that will be treated include introduced grasses, thistles, and
gazanias. These weeds are generally controlled by hand pulling or
spraying with a chemical herbicide (Roundup Bioactive). Council also
treat climbing weeds, such as Cape Ivy. A pink dye is added to chemical
weed spray to highlight areas that have been sprayed for foreshore
users. The NRA team spray herbicides on non-windy days to ensure the
safety of the public. The chemical is used in accordance with
manufacturers’ instructions and is considered safe for use on the
foreshore. Grassy Weed Control takes place all year round.
Woody Weed Control
The woody weeds are larger (0.5m-3m+) weeds such as Mirror Bush,
Boxthorn and Pittosporum. These weeds are generally controlled by hand
pulling, or cutting with a chainsaw/loppers at the base of the plant and
painting the stump with a chemical herbicide. Woody Weed Control
activities are mainly completed in the Summer and Autumn months.
