Dr. Syamsul Maarif, MSi, born in September 1950 has been the Minister/Chief of National
Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) since 2008. He holds a Doctorate Degree in
Sociology from University of Indonesia and a Master Degree in Sociology from University of
Airlangga. He has also studied in the Military Academy of the Republic of Indonesia (1973)
His career path in the military and government has been:
 Chief of Staff of Regional Military V Brawijaya (1977)
 Chief of Information Center – Armed Forces HQ Republic of Indonesia (1998)
 Governor of Military Academy (Magelang, 1999)
 Member of Indonesian Parliament (2000 – 200vv3)
 Assistant to the Commander in Chief of Indonesian Armed Forces for Social
Communication Affairs (2003 – 2005)
 Assistant to the Chief of Indonesian Military for Territorial Affairs (2005 – 2006)
 CEO of National Coordinating Board for Disaster Management (BAKORNAS PB) (2006)
 Chief of National Agency for Disaster Management (2008 – present)
 Lecturer at Indonesian Defense University, Jember University and Bandung Institute of
Technology
He received several awards in recognition of his dedication and contribution for the
enhancement of disaster management in Indonesia.
 Bintang Mahaputra Utama (highest award for civilian-given by the President of the
Republic of Indonesia)
 Nusa Reksa Pratama from University of Gadjah Mada.
Suggested Talking Points
Minister Maarif was the Chair of the 5th Asia Ministerial Conference, which was
successfully held in on 22-25 October 212 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
a) Congratulate on the success of 5th AMC DRR and emphasize on keeping the
momentum of the stakeholders and governments engagement in taking the
commitments made in the 5th AMCDRR forward.
b) Emphasize the need of monitoring the efforts being made in following the AMCDRR
declaration and fulfilling the commitments made by different stakeholders in the
region.
c) Explore how the 6 AMCDRR host benefit from the learning of BNPB in organizing
the next ministerial.
d) Encourage Indonesia and BNPB to continue their effort not only in Indonesia but also
supporting the region in leading DRR and HFA 2 discussions.
e) Follow up on the Global Championship of President of Indonesia; what UNISDR can
do further to support the Global Champion for DRR to promote DRR globally.
f) BNPB to inform about the newly established foundation to ensure the sustainability of
disaster risk reduction efforts undertaken in the country; the foundation will support
the successors of (future) BNPB
