Our craft bakers hand make the pies in small batches and bake slowly to ensure the delicate buttery pastry crumbles. The Standard Mince Pies, the half dozen weigh a total of 300g, RRP £4.95 The Mini Mince Pies, one dozen weigh a total of 240g, RRP £5.49 Did you know the ancestor of today’s sweet and dainty mince pies was the medieval Christmas pie! Centuries ago the pie was large, contained meat and was oval to represent Christ’s manger. The Medieval Crusaders brought with them spices which were soon added to the pies. Whilst the tradition of eating Christmas pies in December continued through to the Victorian era, by which time the recipe had become much sweeter and its size had reduced significantly. It is said that you should eat a mince pie on every day of the 12 days of Christmas, and to refuse one is supposed to be unlucky! The Christmas Puddings are bursting with sumptuous fruits ~ a perfectly decadent ending to Christmas Day lunch. The Roots & Wings puddings are made from the finest ingredients. Plump organic raisins, currants and sultanas are soaked in Cognac and ale before being mixed with Caribbean cane sugar, fresh organic eggs, the juice of lemons and oranges and zesty spices. Each pudding is steamed gently then cooled and wrapped carefully. It’s hard to resist decorating the pudding with holly, dousing it in a dash of brandy and flaming it before carefully, but ceremoniously, bringing it to the table for a guaranteed round of applause! The Christmas Pudding weighs 454g, RRP £6.99 The Mini Christmas Pudding weighs 100g, RRP £2.25 The Christmas pudding as we know it today originated in medieval England and contained meat, onions and spices! It was Prince Albert’s love of the pudding that made it so popular, and by this time it’s recipe had evolved to one that looked and tasted much as it does today. We know tradition surrounds the making of the Christmas Pudding which were made a year in advance. Just before the start of Advent, the day became known as "Stir-up Sunday," and historically everyone in the household gave the mixture a stir and made a wish while doing so. One superstition says that the pudding should be made with 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and His Disciples. It was common practice to include silver coins usually a threepence or sixpence - the coin was believed to bring wealth in the coming year!
