When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and large waves can damage buildings, trees and cars. How do hurricanes form? Hurricanes only form over really warm ocean water of 80°F or warmer. What is storm surge? Storm surges is the water that causes flooding on the coast. There are computers that help forecasters to predict or guess the amount of storm surge that will flood and destroy the coast. When does hurricane season start? The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30, but most hurricanes occur during the fall months. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season is from May 15 to November 30. What is the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon? Nothing except where they are located. Tropical storms happen in the world's oceans, and they are the same type of storm. They can be called hurricanes, typhoons, or cyclones. Near the United States they are called hurricanes. What is coastal beach erosion? Coastal beach erosion is the taking away of land. Waves are made by storms, wind, or hurricanes and can cause coastal erosion. Hurricane Safety Tips BEFORE A HURRICANE: 1. Have a disaster plan and a pet plan ready. 2. Before a storm call your veterinarian information on preparing your pets for an emergency. 3. Board up windows and bring in outdoor objects that could blow away. 5. Have a disaster supply kit for your home and car. Include a first aid kit, canned food and a can opener, bottled water, battery-operated radio, flashlight, protective clothing and written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water 6. Make sure your car is filled with gasoline. DURING A HURRICANE: 1. Stay away from flood areas. 2.Always stay indoors during a hurricane, because strong winds will blow things around. 3. If emergency workers say to leave and go to a safer, then do so right away. AFTER A HURRICANE: 1.Stay indoors until it is safe to come out. 2. Check for injured or trapped people, without putting yourself in danger. 3. Watch out for flooding which can happen after a hurricane. 4. Do not drive in flooding water.
