2.ANTHONY JACKSON
Anthony Jackson II, a son of Richard and Ursula (Hildyard)
Jackson, was born in Killingswold Grove, Yorkshire, England in
1594 and died in 1666, probably in Ireland.
Anthony was a friend of King Charles I and was admitted to the
Inner (Chamber) Temple in 1616. He was called to the bar in 1635 and
was knighted at Breda, Holland in 1650.
Anthony was imprisoned in the Tower of London for eight years,
beginning November 1, 1651. His wife's name is unknown.
E-mail from Leland Jackson to Don Norman Nov 25 2002
"In the hopes of finding out more about Sir Anthony's four sons, who are
said to have been born in St. Michael's Parish, Eccleston, Lancashire
between 1624 and 1630, I commissioned a research study at the Institute
of Local and Family History of the University of Central Lancashire. I
have not understood how Sir Anthony maintained a family in Lancashire
while he was "at Court" and in the Inner Temple in London or why he and
his sons ended up on opposite sides in the English Civil War. I had
hoped that this study would shed some light on these questions."
"The Institute has submitted a very thorough report outlining their
research. Unfortunately, they can find no reference to Sir Anthony or
his family in Lancashire. The parish register for St. Michael's does
not begin until 1659. Wills, probates, and many other sources were
examined, with no luck. However, references to his later years were
found in the Calendars of State Papers, and these give an interesting
glimpse of his eight years as a prisoner in the Tower of London.
Included is the only reference to his wife that I know of, but without
her name. Attached is that section of the report as a pdf file."
Attached file:
"Since Sir Anthony Jackson had been [reported to be ] Private Secretary
to the Duke of Buckingham, it was hoped that there might be reference to
him in the Calendars of State Papers, Domestic Series. An extensive
number of volumes, thirty nine in total, were examined beginning with
the volume covering the period 1611-18,through to the years 1661-2.As
all these volumes are approximately two and a half inches thick, it
would have taken a very considerable amount of time to read every
volume. Fortunately, the volumes are accompanied by an index. This made
the search much easier. Unfortunately, there was no mention of Sir
Anthony, or Anthony Jackson as he would be then, until after the end of
the Civil War. The first mention of him came in September 1651, when it
is recorded that he and some other prisoners had escaped following their
capture at the Battle of Worcester. A full transcription of this appears
later. Less than 2 months later on 3rd November 1651,Sir Anthony has
clearly been recaptured, and the Calendars state that he was being held
prisoner accused of 'high treason, for invading the nation with Charles
Stuart and proclaiming him King of England'. During the following weeks
he was permitted to speak to one Arthur Farewell and also his wife. The
full name of his wife is not recorded. She is merely referred to as Mrs.
Jackson. He was also permitted to speak with Dorothy Cowley and Richard
and Mary May regarding a conveyance of land wherein he was a Trustee.
On 16th February 1652/3,Sir Anthony is recorded as petitioning to be
permitted liberty of the tower. Nothing further is recorded about this
petition. However, later in the year, November 4th,it is recorded that
Sir Anthony is to be allowed to give evidence in a case at the Court of
Common Pleas held in Westminster Hall. He is to be attended by his
Keeper. Not content with petitioning for freedom within the Tower, Sir
Anthony was recorded on l0th of March 1653/4 as petitioning for his
release on security of 'not acting prejudicially.
He claims that he was a servant only to the 'young King of Scots,
but never in arms'. His claim was not believed as there is a note at the
end of this petition stating that he was the 'Herald that Proclaimed
Charles Stuart'.
Six months later, on 1st September 1654,there is evidence that the
parliament was considering sending Sir Anthony into exile. For
proclaiming Charles Stuart King, he was 'to be banished, on security not
to return without leave. Nothing further is mentioned of this, and it is
clear that this enforced exile did not come about."

Andrew Jackson Sr., a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Vance) Jackson,
was born in Limvady, Ulster, Ireland about 1730. He married Elizabeth
Hutchinson in Ireland.
According to her son, Andrew Jr., Elizabeth died in Charleston, SC
in November 1781, after contracting "ship's fever" from nursing two
nephews, Joseph and William Crawford, on a British prison hulk in
Charleston Harbor.
Andrew Sr. was politically active in Ulster and was a member of
the "United Men" or "United Irishmen", an organization opposed to
English rule of Ireland. The British government outlawed the
organization and made membership punishable by death. Andrew's
membership was discovered and he fled to America on a few hours
notice.
Andrew visited his brother David and his half-sister Margaret
(Jackson) McCaughey in Pennsylvania and then settled in Cecil County,
Maryland. After a few years, the family moved to North Carolina.
Andrew died in North Carolina in February 1767.

John Jackson, a son of Thomas Jackson, was born in Ulster, Northern
Ireland in 1719. He moved with his family to London, England about
1723. His father died in London in 1725.
In 1748, John emigrated to Cecil County, Maryland. In 1755, he
married Elizabeth Cummins in Cecil County.
Elizabeth was born in England January 8, 1729. She was orphaned
as a child and was reared by a maiden aunt. After her aunt's death,
Elizabeth came to New York in search of her sister. Finding that her
sister had died of yellow fever. Elizabeth then moved to Cecil County
MD to live with friends from London.
In "Hacker's Creek Journal" Volume XVI, Issue 3, 1998, John Jackson
presents another story of John Jackson and Elizabeth Cummins's life in
England. Jackson states that both John and Elizabeth were transported to
America as convicted felons in 1749 aboard the "Litchfield". Elizabeth
Cummins, also known as Elizabeth Little, was convicted in the first week
of April of 1749 of stealing a long list of property from the home of
Thomas Holland in the parish of St. Catherine Coleman. Elizabeth's
accomplice, Hannah Martin, testified against Elizabeth and she was saved
from hanging by a plea for leniency by Mrs. Holland.
A John Jackson was convicted in mid January 1749 in London of
stealing property valued at more than 120 guineas from his relative,
Henry Jackson. There is no solid proof that John Jackson was transported
to America aboard the "Litchfield" but that appears to have been the
first convict transport after his conviction.
In 1758, the family moved to Loudon County VA. After about a
year, they moved to the South Branch of the Potomac River. Elizabeth
is reported to have related that they "... settled there in a fort
four years at George Wilson's on Mill Creek." They next moved to a
site on Lost River Road, near present day Moorefield, Hardy County,
WV.
In 1770, they moved to Pendleton County VA (WV) and Elizabeth
bought 3,000 acres of land with her inheritance. This tract included
present day Buckhannon, WV.
John served the Colonies in the American Revolution. He was in
the Battle of Kings Mountain and was name a Lieutenant of Militia in
1787.
About 1782, the family moved to Clarksburg in Harrison County
VA (WV).
John Jackson died September 25, 1804 and Elizabeth died in
1828.

George Jackson, a son of John and Elizabeth (Cummins) Jackson, was
born in Cecil County MD January 9, 1757 and died in Muskingum County
Ohio in 1832. In 1773, he claimed 400 acres of land in the vicinity
of present day Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV.
George was a member of the frontier militia and was commissioned a
Colonel of militia by George Washington during the Revolution. The
following court proceeding from Harrison County VA describes his part in
General George Rogers Clark's 1781 expedition.
"State of Virginia Harrison County. On the 21st day of October 1833
personally appears in open court Christopher Nutter who being first duly
sworn according to Clark Law, deposeth and saith that he is now in his
seventy-fourth year of age that in the spring of the year 1781 Captain
George Jackson preceeded in virtue as afffian understood of a commission
------ Governor of Virginia appointing said Jackson to raise a company
of volunteers that affiant joined said compaign at most Buckhannon in
what is now in the Court\County of Lewis in this State. That volunteers
proce were rased to join an expedition under the command of General
Colonel George George Rogers Clark. That in the campaign so raised and
commanded by said Jackson, William White was first Lieutenant, Jacob
Westfall was Second Lieutenant and Hezekiah Davison was ensign and
quarter master. That said company marched under the command of said
Jackson and joined the expedition about fourteen miles above Fort Pitt.
That said company proceded under the command of said Jackson with the
residue of the troops the whole commanded by said George Rogers Clark,
down the Ohio river, and ____at the falls of the Ohio river. On the 19th
of August 1781, when the troops reached the falls, the company commanded
by Captain Jackson numbered one hundred & four rank and file, that they
remained under the command of said Clark untill late in the fall of the
same year of 1781. The company was then discharged and marched back to
the place where they volunteered by the said Captain George Jackson.
That affiant continued to reside in Harrison County Virginia from the
time he returned from said expedition until this day. That affint was
frequently out in scouting parties and in pursuit of Indians until the
close of the Revolution and untill the cessation of Indian hostilities.
That during all this and period Captain Jackson acted as Captain and
continued to command as such Captain of the Rangers or Scouts untill
hostilities with Indians ceased which did not occur untill after the
close of the Revolutionary war. During the whole period Captain Jackson
had the contract of the line of blockhouses from Buckhannon to the Ohio
river, employed scouts or spies and so as charged with the defence of
the frontier. Affiant further states that after the return of the troops
from Clark's Expedition affiant as has been on several occasions with
Captain Jackson under his command and in the pursuit of Indians who had
committed depredations on the settlements on the Monongalia waters in
Virginia. Affiant has no acquaintance with any person now living except
Alexander West of Lewis County and himself who belonged to the company
commanded by said Captain Jackson in Clark's Expedition. Affiant further
states that Captain Jackson was an eff, cient and able officer in Clark's
Campaign as aforesaid and displayed great skill energy and activity in
protecting the Settlements on the water of the Monongalia river in
Virginia."
The first Harrison county VA court was held at George's home in
1784. George was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses, was a
member of the Virginia State convention that ratified the Federal
Constitution and served three terms in Congress.
George married Elizabeth Brake in Hardy County Va (WV) November 13,
1776. Elizabeth, a daughter of Jacob Sr. and Elizabeth (Cooper) Brake,
was born in VA February 22, 1757 and died in March 1812. After her
death, he married Nancy (Richardson) in Ohio in November 16, 1814. His
will is dated at Zanesville, Ohio January 21, 1831 and was recorded
there June 27, 1832.

Edward Jackson, a son of John and Elizabeth (Cummins) Jackson, was
born at Moorefield, Hampshire County, VA March 1, 1759 and died in
Lewis County, VA (WV) December 25, 1828.
He married Mary Haddan in Harrison County October 13, 1783. Mary,
a daughter of David Haddan, was born in NJ May 15, 1764 and died in
Harrison County April 17, 1796.
Edward was commissioned a Captain of Militia in Randolph County VA
May 28, 1787. He was promoted to Colonel in 1790. The May 28, 1787
minutes of the first county court of Randolph County contain a
recommendation to request the Governor to appoint Edward Jackson
Surveyor of the county. He was appointed a county justice May 29,
1787, commissioner of revenue in 1791 and as sheriff in 1792.
Edward married Elizabeth Wetherholt Brake in Harrison County
October 13, 1799. Elizabeth, a daughter of John and Elizabeth
(Wetherholt) Brake, was born January 11, 1772 and died in Lewis
County August 19, 1835.
In 1786, Harrison County VA granted Edward "liberty to build a
mill or mills on land ceded to him by George Bush at Peatroes Fish Pot
on the West Fork and that the sheriff summons a jury to condemn as
much land at said Fishpot as is allowed by law for building mills and
make report thereof to the next court." A mill of some sort must have
been built by June 20, 1800 as a record in the Virginia Assembly for
that date noted that the Monongahela River was "navigable as far as
Edward Jackson's mill."
After 1801, Edward moved to the land near the mill. He surveyed
the town of Weston, was appointed a commissioner to construct a court
house for Lewis County VA in 1819. He was appointed a justice of the
peace in 1820 and represented Lewis county in the Virginia assembly in
1822 and 1823.
