TRANSITIONS – CHANGE FROM CHILDREN TO ADULT SERVICES
It was brought to my attention in January 2011 that my daughter would be having a
review in May of that year to decide what she would do when she changed from
children’s services to adult services.
I started to look at some of the options that were available and the following is what
I found out.
Please note, government and council policies have changed since then and some of
the persons I contacted may not be the ones presently running these organisations
or departments.

Adult Review:
Before you go to the review know exactly what you want for your child and the
reasons why. There will be representatives from various organisations at the
meeting and your child will be discussed. The attention will then turn to you and
you will be asked what you think. Do not think about what you want. Tell them this
is what you want.

TRANSITIONS JOBS AVAILABILITY:
I went to my daughter's opportunities night at her school on 3rd November 2011.
These are the people that I spoke to with regards to companies that might have
jobs for children like my daughter.
I spoke with Mike Francis from the Transitions Team about how his
department get involved with this subject.
He gave me the following information. There is a person who can be contacted
namely Clive Diver on 01223 545090 who is the Disabled Employment
Advisor.
Obviously this is through the job centre.
I spoke with Sue Craven who is in charge of the disabilities section at
Huntingdon regional college. She informed me that a person “Gavin Cox” is in
charge of the employment facilities at the college.
He is in charge of the Bridgeway learning and development for students with
disabilities.
They have contact with companies such as Waitrose, Sainsbury and Tesco etc.
They use these companies along with others for work experience and if the
person likes the experience they could go on to be employed by these companies.
This department is in a building along side the college and runs courses to
prepare students for the big outside.
Please note they use organisations such as Papworth through Owl to give
students experience in cafes and garden Centre’s etc.
Bridgeway – Huntingdon Regional College
Gavin Cox 01480 379100 Ext 217
Richard Ashford and Mark Hawking 01480 379100 Ext 219
I spoke with Steve Mayes Area Manager, Learning for life and Work with the
Papworth Trust
He informed me that basically they use the Owl organisation to provide work
experience at their café or such businesses as garden Centre’s etc.
As regards such organisations as Sainsburys etc., if parents or students like to
contact him they would see what they could do.
He said that they are going to try and expand on this aspect of employment

I spoke with David Clark from Cambridge Mencap. They provide support to
students to gain paid employment.

I did not speak with Alison I found out from the college that she is the lady to
speak to. She was not at the college that day.
It seems to me that children with my daughters problems will have to go through
the above organisations and many more not listed.
They have contacts with various companies, but I would imagine that this could
be very limited according to the child’s capabilities. It is something that the
parent and the child will have to arrange with the education organisation or
Transitions Team that they are dealing with at the time.
The following might be of interest and give you information on what has
happened with us. This I am sure will not be everything that we will come
across.
When children are in the process from moving from childrens services to adult
services most parents do not know how much of their time it will involve.
In the last four weeks we have on my daughters behalf been swamped with
forms from various government departments.
We have received a Fairer Contribution assessment form to fill in. (From
LGSS Operations Directorate)
A form for Employment and support allowance. This can be done over the
phone. (From the Job Centre)
Employment and Support Allowance:
To claim over the phone. 0800 023 48 88
A form for Limited Capability for work. (From the Job Centre Plus)
A Personal Indicative budget and financial contribution. (From the LDP
Partnership) (You have to supply a plan as to how this money is going to be
spent)
9
A form for Claim for employment and support allowance - extra money-severe
disability premium (From Job Centre Plus)
With these forms you also have to supply copies of the following.
Birth Certificate
Statements from Bank/building society accounts.
Disability payments
Income support
Carers allowance
Housing costs
Etc, Etc.
We have had the Transitions direct payment people in quite a few times and
this entails having to find out what you want for your child as regards personal
assistants and things like respite.
We have had to talk to people or visit all the places involved in this and still it
is difficult to come to a decision because the options do not only entail the
present, but what is going to happen when they are 21 to 25 years of age.
This means thinking ahead for things such as independent supported living .
This side of the direct payments will also include payment for the fifth day of
the week for my daughters education.
Therefore you have to contact various other organisations to try and get
something for this fifth day or what ever your arrangements are..
We had to go to the Regional College and sit down with the course leader and
work out which four days my daughter will attend college, this will then tell us
which day the extra education has to be arranged for.
This means that the direct payments for the education side of all this has also
to be arranged and how your child is going to get to these places.
We applied to the Job centre for ESA. We did this over the phone and this
was with the Northhampton office.
On talking with the Cambridge Disability Association apparently there are
different options on this, so, we appealed to have this changed, we found out
that in actual fact it was through the Peterborough office.
We had a new form for Disability Living Allowance come through. We had to
ask for help on this and we managed to get copies of assessments on my
daughter, which is her Transitions Assessment and any Respite ones as well.
Then an Individual education plan. These will help if sent along with your
application.
Parents should get the help of the Cambridge Disability Association or the
British Brokerage Association as you will need guidance.
