Scotland and Ireland Study Abroad Program
2014 Schedule
Saturday, July 5
Check-in to flats upon arrival to Edinburgh. Dr. Bell will give information about
location when it becomes available.
4:00-5:30pm: Orientation/lecture at student’s flat. Maps and
other helpful information will be handed out and discussed.
6:00pm: Bus tour of Edinburgh
Sunday, July 6
Free day in Edinburgh.
Monday, July 7
Flight to Dublin.
Afternoon: Bus tour of Dublin
Tuesday, July 8
10:00am-12:00pm: Ireland: its history and people
Lecture given by Dr. David Dickson, Professor of History,
Trinity College, Dublin
12:00-1:30: Lunch.
1:30-til: Tour of Dublin Castle and Christ Church Cathedral
Wednesday, July 9
Bus to Belfast
10:00am-12:00pm: The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Lecturer to be determined
Lunch with lecturer.
Return to Dublin.

Free day in Dublin until evening flight to Edinburgh.
Friday, July 11-Sunday July 13
Free weekend.
Monday, July 14
10:00am-12:00pm: Questions of Identity. The Case of Ireland and Scotland.
Lecture given by Dr. Peter Petrakis, Professor of Political Science,
Southeastern Louisiana University.
Tuesday, July 15
10:00am-12:00pm: Who are the Scots? An Introduction to the
History, Culture, and Politics of Scotland.
Lecture given by Dr. Richard Finlay, Professor of History,
Strathclyde University
12:00-1:30pm: Lunch with Professor Finlay.
2:00pm-4:00pm: Tour of Edinburgh Castle
Wednesday, July 16 10:00am-12:00pm: The Politics and Culture of the Scottish Enlightenment.
Lecture given by Dr. Jeffrey Bell, Professor of Philosophy,
Southeastern Louisiana University.
Free afternoon.
Thursday, July 17
Day trip to Inverness and tour of Culloden battle site.
Depart Waverly train station 8am
Arrive Inverness 12 noon
Open return from Inverness (we encourage you to stay on through the
weekend and explore the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness, and more)
Friday-Sunday, July 18-20
Free weekend.
Monday, July 21
10:00am-12:00pm: The Philosophy of David Hume
Lecture by Dr. Peter Millican, Professor of Philosophy,
Oxford University.
12:00-1:30pm: Lunch with Dr. Millican.
1:30-til: tour of the National Museum of Scotland.
Tuesday, July 22
10:00am-12:00pm: Scots Law and Scottish Politics.
Lecture given by Dr. Peter Petrakis
12:00pm-1:30pm: Lunch with Dr. Petrakis.
1:30-til: tour Greyfriar’s Kirk, St. Giles Cathedral, and Holyrood
Palace.
Wednesday, July 23 10:00am-12:00pm: Scotland’s Current and Future Role in the
United Kingdom and Europe.
Lecture by Dr. Innes Kennedy, Lecturer in Cultural Studies,
University of Highlands and Islands
12:00-1:30: Lunch with Dr. Kennedy
1:30-2:30: summary and review of lectures
Tour of Scottish Parliament.
Thursday, July 24
Conclusion of Study Abroad Program
Day trip to Stirling Castle, William Wallace monument.
Friday, July 25-Saturday, Noon, July 26. Free. Check out at 12 noon.
Completed exams and book reports due by August 8.
