Gas Laws Worksheet
Boyle, Charles, Combined and Ideal Gas Laws
1) If 22.5 L of nitrogen at 748 mm Hg are compressed to 725 mm Hg at constant temperature.
What is the new volume?
Ans: P1V1=P2V2
P1= 748mm of Hg V1 =22.5L P2 = 725mm of Hg
V2 = (748*22.5)/725 =23.21L
2) A gas with a volume of 4.0L at a pressure of 205kPa is allowed to expand to a volume of
12.0L. What is the pressure in the container if the temperature remains constant?
Ans: P1V1=P2V2
P2 = (4*205)/12 = 68.33L
3) What pressure is required to compress 196.0 liters of air at 1.00 atmosphere into a cylinder
whose volume is 26.0 liters?
Ans: P1V1=P2V2
P2 = 196 x1/26 =7.54atm
4) A 40.0 L tank of ammonia has a pressure of 12.7 kPa. Calculate the volume of the ammonia if
its pressure is changed to 8.4 kPa while its temperature remains constant.
Ans: P1V1=P2V2
V2 = 40 x12.7/8.4 = 60.48L
5) A sample of neon gas occupies a volume of 2.8 L at 1.8 atm. What would its volume be at 1.2
atm?
Ans: P1V1=P2V2
V2 = 2.8* 1.8/1.2 =4.2L
6) Calculate the decrease in temperature when 6.00 L at 20.0 °C is compressed to 4.00 L.
Ans:V1/T1 =V2/T2
T2 = 4.00 x 293/6.00 =195.3
Decrease in temp =293-195.3=97.67
7) A container containing 5.00 L of a gas is collected at 100 K and then allowed to expand to
20.0 L. What must the new temperature be in order to maintain the same pressure (as required by
Charles' Law)?
Ans:V1/T1 =V2/T2
T2 = 20 *100/5 = 400k
8) A gas occupies 900.0 mL at a temperature of 27.0 °C. What is the volume at 132.0 °C?
Ans:V1/T1 =V2/T2
V2 = 900 x 405/300 = 1215mL
9) If 15.0 liters of neon at 25.0 °C is allowed to expand to 45.0 liters, what must the new
temperature be to maintain constant pressure?
Ans:V1/T1 =V2/T2
T2= 45*298/15 = 894 K
T2 = 894 -273 = 621C
10) A gas balloon has a volume of 106.0 liters when the temperature is 45.0 °C and the pressure
is 740.0 mm of mercury. What will its volume be at 20.0 °C and 780 .0 mm of mercury pressure?
Ans = P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
V2 = 740 *106*293/ (318 * 780) = 92.66l
11) If 10.0 liters of oxygen at STP are heated to 512 °C, what will be the new volume of gas if
the pressure is also increased to 1520.0 mm of mercury?
Ans = P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
V2 = 760 * 10 *785/(273*1520) =14.38L
12) A gas is heated from 263.0 K to 298.0 K and the volume is increased from 24.0 liters to 35.0
liters by moving a large piston within a cylinder. If the original pressure was 1.00 atm, what
would the final pressure be?
Ans = P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
P2 = 1 X 24 *298/(263*35) = 0.777atm
13) The pressure of a gas is reduced from 1200.0 mm Hg to 850.0 mm Hg as the volume of its
container is increased by moving a piston from 85.0 mL to 350.0 mL. What would the final
temperature be if the original temperature was 90.0 °C?
Ans = P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
T2 = 850*350 * 363/(1200*85)= 1058.75 K
14) A sample of argon gas at STP occupies 56.2 liters. Determine the number of moles of argon
and the mass in the sample.
Ans: 22.4L at STP is 1 mole
Moles = 56.2 /22.4 =2.51mol
Mass = 2.51 x 40
15) A 12.0 g sample of gas occupies 19.2 L at STP. What is the molecular weight of this gas?
Ans: 22.4L at STP is 1 mole
Moles = 19.2/22.4 =0.857mol
Molar mass = 12.0/0.857=14g/mol
