Focus on Energy Celebrates Earth Day
Flip Your Fridge and Cool Down Energy Costs
It might keep things cold, but if your refrigerator is old, it’s keeping your energy
savings on hold. Upgrading to an ENERGY STAR®-certified model frees up those
savings through lower utility costs while helping you help the planet.
Starting on Earth Day April 22, the Environmental Protection Agency is launching
a nationwide campaign that encourages people to “Flip Your Fridge” and replace
outdated, inefficient refrigerators with models that qualify for the EPA’S
ENERGY STAR certification.
Replacing an aging refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR model is among the easiest ways to save on
household energy costs. A new fridge can save a household up to $750 in lower utility costs over five
years. Focus on Energy makes it even easier — and more rewarding — by paying a $40 incentive to
customers for having outdated refrigerators picked up at their homes and taken to a recycling plant.
Even if you don’t plan on purchasing a new fridge or freezer, through Focus on Energy, you can still
recycle that extra fridge that’s sitting in your basement or garage. The service is offered at no cost. To

“Just because it’s running doesn’t mean your old refrigerator is working like it should,” said Tamara
Sondgeroth, Focus on Energy Director of Operations. “Think about it. Unlike other household appliances,
you can’t save energy by using your refrigerator less. The fridge is always plugged in, and if it has access
to energy all the time, it makes sense to have an ENERGY STAR model that uses electricity as efficiently
as possible.”
