September, 2014 H OOF IN M OUTH G AZETTE V o l u me 1 , I s s u e 6 Saddle & Harness Association, Inc., Norco, CA Editor’s Message There was a very good turnout for the riding and driving only May make-up show on August 3rd. It was a surprisingly nice summer day and the show moved very quickly, started at 9:00 and we were done by 3:00. Everyone seemed to enjoy the show and the short day. WARNING! ONLY TWO SHOWS LEFT THIS SEASON! Yes, believe it or not, summer has slipped away and fall is upon us. The Saddle and Harness show season is also slipping away, there are only two shows left to collect those wining points for the Year End championships. It is not too late to take your place in the winner’s circle. The club as always thanks our fantastic team of volunteers for their continued excellence in putting on our shows. Please help them out by preregistering and being at the gate on time for your classes. All staff members are volunteers, so please be kind! Please Pre-enter Take advantage of the ON-LINE PRE ENTRY or pre-register by mail to save time and money. Preentry is only $8 per class. Show day is $10 per class. On a warm summer day a small but enthusiastic group showed up to strut their stuff for the club. My boys and I were joined by a trio of great ladies Kristina, Shannon and Liz. Page 32 The Fine Art of Carriage Driving Several Saddle and Harness members (and potential members) attended the carriage driving classes and clinic conducted by Patricia Demers and hosted by Liza Rodgers at the Rancho Santiago Obstacle Center in Norco. Hoof Pagein 3 Mouth Gazette Hoof in Mouth Gazette Page 3 The Cost of Satisfaction Musings by David Ramey, DVM http://www.doctorramey.com/the-cost-of-satisfaction/ I have come to realize that there are lots of people who really like over-caring for their horses. And, mostly, I don’t see anything wrong with that. I mean, what’s the harm from spending extra time brushing, scratching, walking, etc? It’s good for the horse – it’s good for the person. But it can certainly go further than that – for some people, mixing special grains and supplements, and scheduling appointments for this, that, or the other thing actually provides a sense of joy (even if it doesn’t do anything for the horse). These well-meaning, and entirely laudable desires to provide lots of care, also create a demand. Demand, in turn, can create supply. So, for example, if somebody doesn’t like something about his or her horse (hoof, hair, behavior, etc.), you can be pretty sure that there is going to be some company somewhere that is going to come up with a product to satisfy that demand, or some individual who is “certified” to address that worry. It’s not just a matter of evil people and greedy companies trying to dupe consumers (although I do think that there’s some of that, too). A good bit of all of the product-based nonsense that’s out there comes straight from horse owners. Marketing experts can smell consumers looking for products, and they jump to put something on the shelves. Still, the bottom line is that doing stuff for a horse usually makes the person doing it happy. When someone feels as if he or she is doing a good job with horse care, that person usually feels satisfied. And, mostly, that’s a great way to feel. But you have to remember, that feeling of satisfaction can also come at a considerable cost, and it’s not always a good thing. While sometimes satisfying, providing unnecessary treatments and services certainly costs money, and it may occasionally even do more harm than good.* I really do think that it really behooves you (by the way, I love using the word, behoove, when I’m talking about horses) to try to distinguish between what your horse needs and what is making you happy, if for no other reason because it will make taking care of your horse a bit less expensive. The bottom line is that more is not necessarily better, and, if you want more, you will certainly have to pay for it. Now get out there and give your buddy a good scratch. You’ll both be satisfied. * Pretty much everything has at least the potential for harm. But if there’s no demonstrable benefit, and only risk, no matter how small the risk, it’s really not worth it. ************ TACK SALE, SWAP MEET THE HORSE CONNECTION 33955 S.
