Directions for Teachers: Title (or focus) of the Lesson: A Very Witchy Spelling Bee Grade Level(s): Second Objective(s) The students will be able to differentiate between words with sp, ch, and fr blends and words without those blends. Materials A Very Witchy Spelling Bee, worksheets, construction paper, crayons and/or markers, glue, plastic cauldron, plastic pumpkin, witch’s hat Procedures I. Opener—I will wear a witch’s hat and ask the students to describe the hat I am wearing. We will discuss what they know about witches. After discussing what the children know about witches, I will ask them if any of them have ever been in a spelling bee and to tell the class about their experiences. II. Body— I will read the story A Very Witchy Spelling Bee while asking the students different questions throughout. Does anyone know what wretched means? Would you be able to come up with a ‘z’ word? Can anyone identify a consonant blend? Do you make mistakes when you get nervous? Does anybody know what vile means? Can anybody tell me what Cordelia’s mother meant by describing Beulah Divine as a fiend? III. Closing—After finishing the story, I will ask the students questions about Cordelia’s actions. Do you agree with Cordelia’s decision to turn Beulah Divine into a friend? Why or why not? Do you think it is fair to be nice to everyone even when they are not nice to you? Why or why not? After this discussion, I will explain to the class their extension activity by modeling the activity to the class with demonstration words. Extension Activities The students will watch as I explain that they will be grouping words with sp, ch, and fr blends on the cauldron and the others on the pumpkin. I will demonstrate with the students. I will give good students some words and have them sort them into a plastic cauldron and plastic pumpkin with help from myself and the other students. After the demonstration, I will give the children their worksheet and construction paper and assist them as needed. They will color the cauldron and pumpkin. They will then cut out the cauldron, pumpkin, and “spooky words”. They will separate the words into two groups: blends and no blends. They will then glue the blends onto the colored cauldron and the words with no blends on the colored pumpkin. Directions for Students: 1. Color and cut your cauldron and pumpkin 2.
