Registration for Postgraduate Study 2015-16
Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP)
PGCAP is a part-time, in-service professional development programme designed to support academic
colleagues with a diverse range of teaching responsibilities and academic duties. Academic staff for whom
PGCAP forms part of their probation are given priority for places.

confirmed by mid-September.
Please complete all the sections of this form as fully as you can at this point, expanding boxes as needed. We
acknowledge this is a long form and appreciate your completing it. The information is used to help us fairly
allocate places on the programme, and to help identify alternative development pathways appropriate to
individual needs and experience.

What next?
As PGCAP is a part-time in-service course, confirmation from the Head of Department that s/he supports
your registration for this programme is required. Please ask them to complete the letter of agreement on the
next page of this registration form. Electronic signature or an email from the HoD containing the letter of
agreement is acceptable.
This agreement includes guaranteeing that you will be available to fully attend the timetabled sessions, and
that the HoD is fully aware of the time commitment and will ensure that other departmental duties do not
prevent you from completing this programme in a reasonable time.
It also confirms that you will be allocated a PGCAP mentor. The mentor needs to support you with your
teaching within the departmental context and undertake some peer observation of teaching; the mentor is
not involved in the assessment process. We recommend that mentors are identified in consultation with you
where possible, as this tends to make for a more productive relationship. PGCAP graduates often make
excellent mentors as they are very familiar with the process and ethos of the programme.
Places for 2015/16 will be allocated using the following as the main criteria:

PGCAP Module 1 over the Michaelmas and Lent terms, is for those with less than 3 years HE teaching
experience in a full academic role1

Colleagues with more than 3 years of HE teaching experience in a full academic role, and currently not
holding HEA Fellowship, will be allocated a place on the ATLAS recognition scheme. This is a non-taught
pathway enabling professional recognition with the HEA.
To help you plan your diary, please take note of the programme calendar regarding induction events and
future teaching session dates on the OED website: http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/hr/OED/ED/CAP/
When we have processed your registration we will send you confirmation of your place, dates for the taught
elements of the module and further joining information.
Please contact oed@lancaster.ac.uk with any further enquiries and questions.

Departmental Letter of Agreement
Information for Heads of Department
As this is a part-time in-service course, we require confirmation from you, as Head of Department, that you
support colleagues’ registration for this programme. This includes guaranteeing that s/he will be available to
fully attend the timetabled sessions, and that you are fully aware of the time commitment and will ensure
that other departmental duties still allow him/her to complete this programme in a reasonable time.
Places for 2015/16 will be allocated using the following as the main criteria:

PGCAP Module 1 over the Michaelmas and Lent terms, is for those with less than 3 years HE teaching
experience in a full academic role2

Colleagues with more than 3 years of HE teaching experience in a full academic role, and currently not
holding HEA Fellowship, will be allocated a place on the ATLAS recognition scheme. This is a non-taught
pathway enabling professional recognition with the HEA.
The commitment for PGCAP Module 1 for colleagues with less than 3 years HE teaching experience in a full
academic role, normally involves participants in 38 hours attendance (+6 hours of optional contact time
specifically to supported space in writing for the assessment).
In addition to the attendance requirements both modules of PGCAP involve undertaking ongoing reflective
activities centred on the participant’s practice in the department, and around 15-20 hours of private study to
complete each module’s assignment.
Participants need to be allocated a PGCAP mentor in their department. The mentor needs to support the
participant with his/her teaching within the departmental context and undertake some peer observation of
teaching; the mentor is not involved in the assessment process.
We recommend that mentors are identified in consultation with the individual participant where possible, as
this tends to make for a more productive relationship. PGCAP graduates often make excellent mentors as
they are very familiar with the PGCAP process and ethos.
Details about the programme are available on the website along with some Frequently Asked Questions
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/hr/OED/CAP/
Please discuss the application with the participant, ensuring that you both agree about the commitment
involved. Please then complete the letter of agreement on the next page.
Please contact Simon Allan, PGCAP Programme Director ( s.j.allan@lancaster.ac.uk or ext. 10021) with any
questions you may have.
NB The allocation of a place on the PGCAP programme cannot be confirmed without this letter of
agreement.

Head of Department Letter of Agreement
– please return this section with the completed registration form
As HoD, I have discussed this application with ….……………………………………. and I am happy
for them to attend and complete the PGCAP programme in 2015-16.
Please confirm the following:
I am aware of the time commitment and the dates and times of attendance,
and will ensure availability to attend the timetabled sessions.
This colleague is mandated to undertake the PGCAP programme as part of
their probationary agreement, and this requirement has been explicitly
factored into the workload allocation.
I acknowledge that successful completion of the professional accreditation
requires some studying and writing over and beyond the attendance. This
time commitment has been negotiated between us.
I confirm that the applicant will have a sufficient range of teaching and related
academic duties during the year to complete the course.
I also confirm that a suitable teaching mentor will be identified by the start of
the programme to support the PGCAP work within the department.
