“Tell Your Story: SAR Interview Tool”

Shannon Nolan: SLL Coordinator of Student Involvement

Tuesday, September 15 th & Friday, September 18 th

Description: Leading your career success is a lifetime endeavor! In this interactive workshop, students will discover the magic of a Situation, Actions, and Results (SAR) story. It will be a great investment of your time and energy to help you articulate your experiences concisely and professionally.

About Shannon: Shannon Nolan organizes the Tukwut Leadership Circle (TLC) program as part of her role as a Coordinator of Student Involvement. She also supports other leadership initiatives such as the LEAD

Retreat, Student Organization Leadership Conference, and Academic and Honor Societies at CSUSM.

Shannon holds a BS in Business Administration from CSUSM (2004), MA in Educational Leadership from

SDSU in 2010 and is in progress of a doctoral degree in Higher Educational Leadership. Passionate about personal and leadership development, Shannon participates in the training of SLL peer educators, orientation team, resident advisors, EOP summer bridge, and outreach TRiO programs. Additionally, she currently serves as Chairwoman of the Youth Ambassador board for the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos where she helps with fundraising and awareness efforts.

Description: It takes more than academic knowledge to thrive in college. To get the most out of your college experience, you need to explore personal qualities that can increase your success and personal satisfaction at

Cal State San Marcos. This GRIT workshop will cover topics like overcoming obstacles, building your belief in your own ability to perform well in any situation, reaching your long-term goals, and building your support networks both inside and outside of the college. This workshop will help you tap into who you are and expand your college survival know-how.

About Donna: Donna Heine is a graduate student of experimental psychology at CSUSM. Her undergraduate degree in psychology was also obtained from CSUSM. The focus of her studies is socio-emotional development, specifically the development of empathy toward individuals with severe multiple disabilities.

Donna has remained active in the TLC and PLT for the past three years and has enjoyed presenting her work at leadership retreats and scientific conferences across the country. She looks forward to proposing her thesis this semester and the birth of her first child in February.

“Build Your Brand Starting with Your Resume”

Angela Alvarado: GEICO Recruiter

Tuesday, September 29 th & Friday, October 2 nd

Description: As a leader, having a strong brand is a must! Through this workshop, you will learn how to stand out from the crowd while networking and searching for your dream career. You will walk away with valuable tips and advice on what employers look for and how to maximize your brand. Participants will create a 30 second elevator speech as well as critique a resume. All participants should come prepared with a current resume.

About Angela: As a Regional College Recruiter for GEICO, Angela Alvarado has the opportunity to network, build relationships and recruit students and alumni for GEICO’s Management Development

Program and Summer Internship. Angela graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from

CSUSM in 2007 and beg an working for GEICO as a Claim’s Adjuster shortly after graduation. Angela later pursued and obtained her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from National University in 2011. In

2011, Angela had the opportunity to move into GEICO’s Human Resources Department and recently began taking courses at SDSU to obtain her Certification in Human Resources in order to advance in her career.

Angela has a love for learning, travel and helping others.

Jason Schreiber: Director of Student Life & Leadership

Have you done your personal work around Diversity & Inclusion? How does identity inform or influence leadership? To be an effective leader, one must understand and be aware of self. Our identities influences relationships, how we make decisions, and the values we hold.

Understanding how we show up and what we bring to the situation, will make us better prepared for leadership.

About Jason:

Jason Schreiber is the Director of Student Life & Leadership. His responsibilities include overseeing Student Organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Leadership, Off Campus

Housing, and Multicultural Programs. Jason most recently served as the Director of Student

Activities at the University of San Diego, where he worked with Student Activities, Associated

Students, Torero Program Board, and Welcome Week Jason has been an Instructor of Emerging

Leaders, Introduction to Leadership Studies, and Leadership Studies Capstone. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration, with a Leadership Studies Minor, at St. Norbert College, and his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership at Marian College. Jason serves on the Board for the Rob Benzon Foundation. He is passionate around social justice issues and studying leadership for social change.

“Leading With Civility”

Hilary Taylor Director of the Language Learning Center

Description: Learn a unique and powerful dialogue process that helps dyads (any relationship of 2 people) move from blame and reactivity to understanding and empathy. Conflict becomes an opportunity for connection and growth. Extremely useful for those of us in positions of leadership and power – and also in your personal relationships.

About Hilary: Hilary Taylor came to CSUSM nine years ago to direct the Language Learning Center.

Before her arrival, Hilary managed and developed foreign language programs and language learning centers on both coasts. She supervised various international educational programs, including the

Department of State’s Fulbright Foreign Student Program and Ford Foundation travel and learning grants.

She has over 18 years as an experienced teacher and tutor of various ages. She has created and led courses, team-buildings, and self-awareness sessions for camp counselors and tutors. She has a

Bachelor’s in Comparative Literature from Haverford College. She has a Master’s in French from

Middlebury College.

About Megan (Left): Megan Curran is the Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life. She came to CSUSM from University of Southern California where she worked as Student Services Advisor coordinating orientation programs and advising student organizations. She received her BS from the University of

Rhode Island in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design and her M.Ed. in Postsecondary Education and Student Affairs. Megan enjoys staying active, traveling, and the beach in her free time. About Daphney (Right): Daphney R. Bitanga was born and raised in Oceanside, California and joined Associated Students Inc. at Cal State San Marcos in August 2014. In her current role as the Assistant Director of Programming, she advises

ASI entities in the development and execution of events and programs, as well as serves on various campus committees. Daphney earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from University of California, Irvine and a Master of Education in Postsecondary Administration and Student

Affairs (PASA) from University of Southern California.

“Your TypeFocus Results & Your Leadership Style Discussion”

Pam Wells – Director of the Career Center

Tuesday, October 27 th & Friday, October 30 th

Description: All attendees must complete the TypeFocus Careers Inventory before attending and bring a copy of your TypeFocus results to the workshop. The TypeFocus self-assessment will provide you with your personal Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Pam will help you learn how your MBTI relates to leadership, relationships, and career goals.

About Pam: Pam Wells is the Director of the Career Center at California State University San Marcos where she has worked for eighteen years. Prior to moving to the San Diego area she was the Assistant

Director/Alumni Career Coordinator for Career Services at Bentley College in Waltham, MA. She received her B.F.A. in Painting and M.Ed. in Educational Psychology

– Counseling from the University of Illinois at

Urbana-Champaign where she worked for many years as an Academic Advisor. She is actively involved in professional organizations including SANDAPT (San Diego Chapter of Association for Psychological Type) as a board member, MPACE (Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers), and currently serves on the board of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce.

“Mad Men, Doctors and Slayers: Pop Culture Narratives of Leadership”

Dr. Rebecca Lush – Associate Professor, Literature and Writing Studies

Tuesday, November 3rd & Friday, November 6th

Description: This workshop will be a discussion and analysis of different leadership strategies as portrayed in popular television series with a focus on comparing gendered assumptions about leadership. We’ll compare more “realistic” representations of workplace leadership, such as those portrayed in Mad Men and Scandal , to representations of leadership in shows considered more fantastical, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer,

Doctor Who , and Supernatural . This workshop will help you think more critically about issues of agency and inclusivity; by analyzing popular representations of leadership, you will be able to more reflexively consider your own leadership skills and group-work dynamics with an eye towards equity and inclusion.

About Dr. Lush: Dr.

Rebecca M. Lush holds a Ph.D. in early American literature. Her research includes examining the representation of Native American women in the Anglophone colonial Atlantic world, contemporary American Indian literatures, and film studies. Her dissertation, “The “Other” Woman: Early

Modern Representation of Native American Women 15791690,” won the Geyer Prize for Best Dissertation in British Literature. Her publications include articles on James Fenimore Cooper, Aphra Behn, Gerald Vizenor, Stephen Graham Jones, and Lady Gaga. She is currently completing an

NEH-funded edition of the letters of Margaret Fell, the Mother of Quakerism. She is the coordinator of the Film Studies Minor at CSUSM, the faculty director of the Cougar Chronicle , and currently serves on the Executive Council for the Western Literature Association.

“Carry Over: How Fabricated Initiatives Effect Real-Life”

Lauren Gatto: Coordinator of Student Involvement

Tuesday, November 10th & Friday, November 13 th

Description: This workshop will show how fabricated initiatives effect real-life decisions. Students will participate in activities that will challenge their problem solving and leadership skills. Reflecting on their personal involvement during decision-making situations will help to understand patterns for future circumstances.

About Lauren: Lauren Gatto is a Coordinator of Student Involvement in the Student Life & Leadership office at CSUSM. She helps to advise and support the student organizations and assists with Fundraising Weeks.

Lauren also oversees the Tukwut Life Team which helps to promote and grow spirit and traditions at CSUSM as well as plan Friday night events. Lauren received her BS in Recreation: Special Events and Tourism from

California State University Chico and her MA in Higher Education Administration from Florida International

University. Lauren has worked within Housing and Residential Life at California Polytechnic State University

San Luis Obispo and as a Public Relations Manager in the Cayman Islands. In her free time, Lauren enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

“12 Simple Concepts to Become a Better Leader”

Robert Aiello-Hauser – Director of ASI Community Centers

Tuesday, November 17 th & Friday, November 20 th

Description: Twelve concepts that have helped Robert become a better leader will be passed on to those who attend. Personal stories will be shared. All of the concepts are simple and remind us of the things that make us human and help us become better leaders.

About Robert: Robert Aiello-Hauser is the current Director of the ASI Community Centers that include the

ASI Gender Equity Center and the LGBTQA Pride Center. Robert has worked for ASI for six years including a year as a peer educator while attending the Multi-Subject Teaching Credential program here at CSUSM to teach elementary school. It was during this time that he created the SafeZone Community Workshop

Program. In March 2010 he was hired as Interim Director of the LBGTQ Pride Center and on July 1 st , 2010 he was offered the permanent Director position. In 2013 the ASI Board of Directors asked Robert to take on the Gender Equity Center as Director. Robert has a Master’s Degree in Education from Cal State San

Marcos. In addition, Robert has taught in FirstYear Programs and currently is teaching in the Women’s

Studies Department in the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences (CHABBS) and he also serves on the CSUSM Alumni Board.
