Word Study: Words Their Way!
September 22nd, 2014
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
This week we are starting our word study program, Words Their Way!
Words Their Way is a program that helps students become better spellers
and writers by introducing words and patterns developmentally. Each
student was assessed to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses when
spelling and was placed accordingly. More information is listed below.
Word lists will be given once a week for classwork and homework
accompanied by a choice board that can be found in the word study section
of your student’s binder. We encourage you to engage in and monitor your
child’s sorting of the words each night and help him or her complete their
choice board activities.
Our program will follow a five-day cycle. Please see the schedule
below to determine which day your child’s new word list will be coming
home and which day he or she will be assessed.
For the first week, all students will have the same sort. We will be
taking a mock assessment on Friday. I want to spend a week with the kids,
modeling how the program works
Thank you in advance for working with your child each week to learn
his or her new word list!

Word Study Schedule and Placement
Your child placed in the “within word” group. In this stage, students are able to
correctly spell most single-syllable, short vowel words, beginning consonant digraphs,
and two letter consonant blends. They also attempt to use silent long-vowel markers and
use but confuse long vowel patterns. Our focus will be long vowels, other common long
vowel patterns, r-influenced vowel patterns, dipthongs and vowel digraphs, complex
consonant clusters, and homophones.

Word Study Schedule and Placement
Your child placed in the “syllables and affixes” word study group. In this
stage, students connect word knowledge with vocabulary growth. They can correctly
spell most single-syllable short-vowel and long vowel words and high frequency
words. They make errors at syllable juncture points and in unaccented syllables.
Our focus will be on compound words, inflected endings, open and closed syllables,
accented syllables, unaccented syllables, and prefixes and suffixes.
