“Nitrogen”
NITROGEN
Nitrogen is an element which is discovered
by Daniel Rutherford in 1772.By the time it is
observed that it is really reactive with many
compounds and many metals by Lord Rayleigh, in
1910.Nitrogen is an non-metal with the atomic
number 7,it shows us that it has 5 electrons in its
outer shell which means it will react with
material by gaining electrons. Also, its mass
number is 14 with 7 neutrons and 7 protons. It is
represented in the periodic table with the letter
“N”. It is a colorless, odorless gas at normal
temperature. It is diatomic molecule in the nature.
−210°C is its melting point, and -195.79 °C is the boiling point of it. As you can see,
they are really low, so here we covered another property of nitrogen. On the other
hand; Nitrogen is the 78% of the air, but the nitrogen that we inhaled is directly
exhaled without using it. We take nitrogen from proteins, and they are used to build
muscles and bones in our body.
Here we have 2 ways to have nitrogen;
In a chemical laboratory it is prepared by treating an aqueous solution
of ammonium chloride with sodium nitrite.
NH4Cl(aq) + NaNO2(aq) → N2(g) + NaCl(aq) + 2 H2O (l)
Very pure nitrogen can be prepared by the thermal decomposition of or sodium
azide.
2 NaN3 → 2 Na + 3 N2
Nitrogen is used in lots of areas. For example; it is used to prevent things from
reacting with oxygen. In addition, it can be used to fill some tires. Also, the liquid
version of it is used to freeze things
Lastly, I have one more thing to say about nitrogen. I want to remind you that it
is an poisonous gas; so we should be careful while we are experimenting with it.

Objective: To make the ping pong balls fly.
Hypothesis: As the liquid nitrogen is filled to the bottle, and the cover is located to the
mouth of the bottle the liquid nitrogen causes a great pressure inside, then the bottle will get
larger and larger, and finally this make the 4000 ping pong balls that are with the bottle in
the container fly.

Liquid Nitrogen
Funnel
Plastic Bottle
Big Container
4000 ping pong balls
Process:
The liquid nitrogen is poured to a plastic bottle with the help of funnel. Then the
mouth of the bottle is closed with a cover, and it is put into a big container with 4000 ping
pong balls. Then, as the time passes the liquid nitrogen will cause a great amount of pressure,
and it will become larger and larger until a point, and then the bottle will explode with a
great pressure, so finally this make the 4000 ping pong balls fly.
Conclusion:
According to my observations, it is a typical result that liquid nitrogen causes a great
pressure, when it is closed to a bottle.
