The Outsiders

PART 1: PREDICTION

Read just the title of the poem. What general impressions do you have? What do you think it will be about? What will be the general mood? Why do you think this?

I think it would be about how nothing can stay forever. I think the mood is negative because it talks about how nothing can stay and you have to take care. Also it talks about how nothing good can last. I love how it sounds

Nothing Gold Can Stay

By: Robert Frost

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

PART 2: REACTION

What is your overall opinion of the poem? Why?

I think what the poem is trying to stay is true. Because nothing important can stay for a long time.

What lines stand out to you most? What does it make you think about?

“Nature’s first green is gold” and “Nothing gold can stay.” That lines stand out the most for me, because the first one talks about what is the most important thing or what is your gold and the last sentence tells the message of the story that is that nothing can last forever and it makes the poem more clear.

The flower symbolizes that everything was beautiful and dedicated.

Because it represent at the begging the they had something gold and at the end that they loosed it

Select the three most important words in the poem. Why did you choose each of these?

(These words do not have to be in order of importance)

Gold, Eden, flower

Gold= Everything was wonderful

Eden= Everything was perfect for him, but then everything ruined.

Flower= Everything was beautiful and delicate.

What feelings or emotions does this poem create? How does the author create this mood?

The poem creates nice emotions as well as sad. For example, at first it is talking about how everything is beautiful and then it talks about how you always los it even though you don’t want to.

What is the theme or message of this poem? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?

The message of the poem is that nothing last forever. By that I mean, that you can ruin everything by doing a stupid choice. That’s why it also talks about Eden. Because Eden and

Eve were happy and had everything and because they did a stupid choice the bad came and it didn’t last forever. I totally think it is true.

How does the theme or message of the poem connect to Johnny and Ponyboy’s situation in

The Outsiders? What is the context (what is going on in the book at this point? Why is the poem referenced at this point in the story?

Pony boy message is that he had most of things and because he decided to do a stupid decision he got from most of the things to nothing. And also the poem says you should do things you were tell not to do and that means he did something he was not suppose to do.

So I think the poem represents the difficult time he is having.
