Celebrating 33 Years of Serving the TriState Area PREMIER ACCREDITED CENTER WITH PATH Dear Friend, Maryland Horse Discovery Center This past year Freedom Hills TRP served over 300 students with disabilities. Honorary Board Fred Stone Executive Director Renee S. Dixon, BSES It is hard to pick a favorite student because I love them all. One of my favorite moments is putting Jeremiah on our pony Heidi. Jeremiah is now 18 months old. His Grandmother brings him for lessons. Jeremiah was born blind and mentally challenged. That does not matter to Heidi as Jeremiah sits on Heidi’s back. Heidi cannot see the “Big Smile” on Jeremiah’s Face but Heidi can hear the laughter. She knows Jeremiah is having a great time. Directors Three O’clock comes around and in walks a group of young teenagers from Upper Bay Counseling. When they first came many were very timid around the horses. The students have been hurt emotionally and physically in the past. In their minds they are thinking, “can we trust this place”. Six weeks later Martena is confidently riding Nina around the riding ring. She says “Miss Renee, can we trot now.” Her counselor confides in me how she has seen Martena and the other nine children blossom over the summer. Ryan even told her he has learned to think before acting out, which now keeps him out of trouble.
