It is hard to pick a favorite student because I love them all. One of my favorite moments is
putting Jeremiah on our pony Heidi. Jeremiah is now 18 months old. His Grandmother
brings him for lessons. Jeremiah was born blind and mentally challenged. That does not
matter to Heidi as Jeremiah sits on Heidi’s back. Heidi cannot see the “Big Smile” on
Jeremiah’s Face but Heidi can hear the laughter. She knows Jeremiah is having a great
time.

Three O’clock comes around and in walks a group of young teenagers
from Upper Bay Counseling. When they first came many were very timid
around the horses. The students have been hurt emotionally and
physically in the past. In their minds they are thinking, “can we trust this
place”. Six weeks later Martena is confidently riding Nina around the
riding ring. She says “Miss Renee, can we trot now.” Her counselor
confides in me how she has seen Martena and the other nine children
blossom over the summer. Ryan even told her he has learned to think
before acting out, which now keeps him out of trouble.

When we return from taking our Veterans from Perry Point on a trail ride
they are elated for all of the skills they have learned, how nice it was to
get out of the hospital and enjoy the peaceful walk in the woods. Many of
these individuals suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Through
being at the farm they have learned some skills to help them as they go
through life.
As we prepare for our annual auction I pray that you will find it in your heart to support The
Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program as we do all we can to help people with
disabilities. There are numerous ways you can help: Become an Auction Sponsor, Take
out an ad in our program, Fill a Table or Donate an Auction Item.
May God Bless you for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Renee S. Dixon
