Round 5
Toledo-Lucas County, OH
Proposal for Partners for Places
Fall 2014
Project Title:
Going Beyond Green at the Neighborhood Level
Purpose of Project:
A resident-led demonstration project in the Overland Park neighborhood will mobilize
citizens across the county to take actions that promote sustainability within their own
neighborhoods.
Brief description of project goals, strategy, and key activities (250 words or less):
Through this effort, project collaborators will provide the resident leadership council of the
Overland Park neighborhood with technical assistance and tools to take action on neighborhoodlevel projects that advance goals shared by the residents and the newly adopted sustainability plan,
Going Beyond Green. Beyond accomplishing demonstration projects within the target neighborhood
of Overland Park, this effort will result in an idea bank of completed projects to mobilize residents
of other neighborhoods towards implementing elements of the Going Beyond Green, while paving the
way for the creation of neighborhood level sustainability plans. This demonstration project will
focus on achievable sustainability projects, tools and strategies that will inspire other neighborhoods
to create vibrant, livable and green communities.
The effort will break down elements of the sustainability plan into tangible projects, and
utilize Overland Park as a laboratory for neighborhood-level, resident-led action. Among the
projects to be developed under this initiative are those that promote “Complete Streets” policies and
empower neighbors to advocate for walkable urbanism in the Overland Park neighborhood.
Another project involves a resident-led vacant land reuse competition, which will drive university
students, design firms and other unlikely partners to implement a sustainable reuse project that will
generate excitement, momentum and promote community vitality.
While the projects undertaken focus on one neighborhood, the resulting idea bank will
increase the entire region’s awareness of the sustainability plan and provide other neighborhoods
with tangible, achievable projects that they can undertake that are aligned with and supported by the
wider sustainability planning effort.
