Job Title: Head of Unit, ROLE UK Reporting to: Chair of Trustees Salary: £60,000 pa + 5% pension Contract: Until 31 March 2017 Location: WC1, Central London ROLE UK Rule of Law Expertise Programme (ROLE UK) is a DFID-funded initiative which aims to contribute to improving the rule of law in DFID priority countries by facilitating access to UK based legal and judicial expertise in response to demand from DFID priority countries. The Programme will also share best development practise and play a co-ordination role for HMG and the international pro bono sector in the UK. This unique collaboration between UK Government and the international pro bono UK community is currently funded until March 2017. ROLE UK will: • Support applications for assistance by assisting partners in DFID counties to articulate their needs and help develop interventions that are country-led and owned. • Match and co-ordinate demand with legal expertise from UK government and its related agencies and the UK pro bono sector. • Provide support and funding for in-country rule of law assignments. • Share lessons learned and develop good practise on rule of law capacity building in developing countries. The primary method of delivering this programme will be through the deployment of UK experts to the DFID partner countries. ROLE UK will co-ordinate the requests for legal assistance and work with applicants and experts on providing the most appropriate expertise to fulfil the assignment. ROLE UK Management Unit The programme is being delivered through the ROLE UK Management Unit which was established in February 2015 and is currently being headed by the Interim Head of Unit, Margie Butler. Head of Unit Rule of Law Adviser Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Adviser Programme Support Officer The Policy Adviser will be on secondment from DFID from 1 September 2015 and will be responsible for developing demand for the programme, developing access to legal expertise from both HMG, the judiciary and the UK legal sector to encourage their involvement in the programme and ensuring strong collaboration with DFID and FCO both in the UK and in DFID priority countries. A part-time international development consultant is currently working in the Management Unit to promote the programme and develop and facilitate assignments. The Programme Support Officer is currently being recruited on secondment from HMG. An interim has been in post from February 2015. It is hoped all these posts will be filled by end of July 2015.
