Piazza Grande, the main square of Livorno was designed by Buontalenti under the power of the Medici family. The splendour of this square was taken as an example for “Grand Place Royale” in Paris and “Covent Garden” in London, designed by Inigio Jones. - From Piazza Grande we will walk to the New Synagogue. The old Synagogue was built in 1603, it was designed by Claudio Cogorano and Alessandro Pieroni. It was enlarged in the beginning of the 20th century. The synagogue was the second largest after the one in Amsterdam, and considered the most beautiful in Europe. It was totally destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 1962 by architect Angelo Castro from Rome. He was inspired by the “tent” of the desert in memory of the Exodus. The “Tebà” is built in marble, found in the ruins of the old synagogue. The building next to the synagogue was also designed by Angelo Castro. It is connected to the synagogue by an underground passage and it houses the Archive and the offices of the community. The Oratory Lampronti is used for several services during the winter, replacing the “Tempio Maggiore” during Pesah-Succoth. - Afterwards the Synagogue we will visit the Central Market, also called Vettovaglie. The Central Market, designed by engineer Badaloni, is one of the oldest and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Here we can find the mixed culture of Livorno. - Continuing our walk we will reach “Via Roma, 38”, the birthplace of one of the most famous artist in the world: Amedeo Modigliani. He was a Jew and he studied in Livorno where he received the celebration “bar mitzvah”. In his memory we will taste an aperitif of “absinthe” or ”pastis”, that is very difficult to find elsewhere. We will enjoy the house, where a famous cook will explain the history of Cacciucco and the outstanding use of tomato, imported to Livorno by Sephardic Jews. - From here we will go and visit the Jewish Museum at the Oratorio Martini, in a neoclassical building turned into museum in 1867.
