Jewish Tour 1
Valid all year round
A fascinating tour, full of history and culture, across the cosmopolitan city of Amedeo
Modigliani. Livorno: a city filled with charm, art, history and life.
Price from € 590,00 per person
The price of transfer and guide can be cheaper depending on number of
persons.
- Meeting with tourist guide of Livorno at 9 a.m. at Piazza Grande next to the
famous pastry Dolly. Piazza Grande, the main square of Livorno was designed
by Buontalenti under the power of the Medici family. The splendour of this
square was taken as an example for “Grand Place Royale” in Paris and
“Covent Garden” in London, designed by Inigio Jones.
- From Piazza Grande we will walk to the New Synagogue. The old Synagogue
was built in 1603, it was designed by Claudio Cogorano and Alessandro
Pieroni. It was enlarged in the beginning of the 20th century. The synagogue
was the second largest after the one in Amsterdam, and considered the most
beautiful in Europe. It was totally destroyed during the Second World War and
rebuilt in 1962 by architect Angelo Castro from Rome. He was inspired by the
“tent” of the desert in memory of the Exodus. The “Tebà” is built in marble,
found in the ruins of the old synagogue. The building next to the synagogue
was also designed by Angelo Castro. It is connected to the synagogue by an
underground passage and it houses the Archive and the offices of the
community. The Oratory Lampronti is used for several services during the
winter, replacing the “Tempio Maggiore” during Pesah-Succoth.
- Afterwards the Synagogue we will visit the Central Market, also called
Vettovaglie. The Central Market, designed by engineer Badaloni, is one of the
oldest and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Here we can find the mixed
culture of Livorno.
- Continuing our walk we will reach “Via Roma, 38”, the birthplace of one of
the most famous artist in the world: Amedeo Modigliani. He was a Jew and
he studied in Livorno where he received the celebration “bar mitzvah”. In his
memory we will taste an aperitif of “absinthe” or ”pastis”, that is very difficult
to find elsewhere. We will enjoy the house, where a famous cook will explain
the history of Cacciucco and the outstanding use of tomato, imported to
Livorno by Sephardic Jews.
- From here we will go and visit the Jewish Museum at the Oratorio Martini, in
a neoclassical building turned into museum in 1867. Some of the many

decorations that originally ornated the first synagogue are to be found here.
Unfortunately the oldest and most precious pieces have disappeared, but some
of the ones kept here at the museum show us the high quality of workmanship
which is hard to find elsewhere. For example, there is a crown dated 1636 and
some of the decorations from the 17th century. At the museum the guide will
explain a fascinating history of Jewish Symbology while you will be able to try
out some of the typical Jewish Rochester and wine from Livorno Province
hills.
- We will have lunch either in one of the local restaurants with “kasher” or in
a typical jewish restaurant, with the traditional plate of Livorno: Cacciucco.
- The tour will end in the afternoon with a visit at the Monumental Jewish
Cemetery in Livorno, where some of the most illustrious rabbis are buried
such as Rav Elia Benamozegh z.l., Rav Haim Joseph David Azulai (HIDA)
z.l.; Rav Coriat; Rav Costa; Isaac Nunes Alvarenga; Leudà Coriat. Amongst
the tombs you can find the ones of Nissim s., of David lst. and of the Rosselli
family, as well as the private chapel owned by the Attias family. There is also
the beautiful Neo-Gothic temple dedicated to Chayes, designed by the architect
Marco Treves, which reminds us about Pisa medieval architecture.

Mimbelli. Giovanni Fattori was a Jewish painter and the great master of the

Ulvi Liege (Luigi Levi Moses) , Vittorio Corcos and Amedeo Modigliani. Ulvi
Liege painted Livorno in the twenties and in the thirties, Vittorio Corcos was

Modigliani's significant work of art creation, when he was only fourteen.

situated in the “Venice District”, that is a part of Livorno, together with bridges
and narrow streets, is similar to the real city Venice. It is the oldest part of
Livorno, created under the power of the Medici family. During the trip we will
also see the two fortresses and we will understand how important the canals
were for the merchants.
- We will end our tour, visiting the “old fortress”, which tells us a lot about
the history of Livorno. Probably there was an old Roman tower dated back to
the 5th or 4th century b.C., it was a shelter for the fishermen in the ancient
village. During the centuries the Visconti family first and the Medici family
then expanded the fortress, and it was completed by the Duke Alessandro de’
Medici.
