I DO, WE DO, YOU DO: Runaway Scrape, Goliad Massacre, & Battle of San Jacinto
Learning Target: I can give details surrounding significant events of the Texas Revolution including the
Runaway Scrape, Fannin’s surrender at Goliad, and The Battle of San Jacinto.
WE DO-GUIDED PRACTICE: RUNAWAY SCRAPE
After the defeat at the Alamo, Sam Houston ordered the Texans to move eastward towards Louisiana and the
United States. Fearing for their lives, U.S. settlers, African American slaves, and many Tejanos left their farms,
homes, and towns to avoid being taken or killed by the Mexican troops. This movement of settlers became
known as the RUNAWAY SCRAPE. Conditions were made worse by heavy rains and flooding during the spring
of 1836. Many died from disease and hardships during the Runaway Scrape.

WE DO-GUIDED PRACTICE: MASSACRE AT GOLIAD
Massacre At Goliad - March 27, 1836
After the Alamo, Mexican leader, General
Urrea, surrounded Colonel James Fannin
and the Texans at Coleto Creek. Realizing
they are outnumbered, Texans surrendered
at discretion (to surrender thinking that you
will not be killed but will be treated with
respect). Urrea marched the Texans to the
city of Goliad where Santa Anna ordered the
Texans to be shot even though they
surrendered at discretion. Over 300 Texans
were shot at gunpoint with only a few
escaping in Goliad, TX. The massacre at
Goliad helped unite the Texans like the
Alamo.
After the Massacre at Goliad
More than 1,200 men joined the Texan
Army because they were so angry about the massacre. They were eager to fight the Mexican army and
regularly shouted things like “Remember the Alamo” and “Remember the Goliad” to inspire troops to
train and fight the Mexican Army.
1) How did the Texans respond to the Goliad Massacre? What did they shout?

WE DO-GUIDED PRACTICE: BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO
After the Massacre at Goliad and the Runaway Scrape, Houston began to
prepare his troops. So many Texans were furious at the Mexican army for the
Massacre at Goliad that the Texan army actually grew to 1,200 soldiers. Texans
were anxious to join the fight against Santa Anna and his men. Houston faced
criticism from his own soldiers, Texas countrymen, and Texas President, David G.
Burnet. They all thought he should hurry up and fight Santa Anna. Houston was
steadfast [did not change] in his decision to retreat, prepare his troops, and ignored the criticism.
1) What caused 1,200 men to join the Texan Army?
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
Santa Anna asked the Texans to join the army.
Texans were angry with Santa Anna and the Mexican army for their unfair treatment.
Sam Houston forced people to join the Texan Army
Texans wanted to fight Santa Anna

2) Why were some people unhappy with Sam Houston?

A few weeks later, Houston assembled approximately 900 Texan troops at about 3:00 pm on the banks of the
Buffalo Bayou. The Texans had fought the Mexican soldiers only one day before, but the Texans were ready for
battle. Texan soldiers moved from the woods onto an open field, near where the Mexican Army was camped.
They were unseen by the Mexican forces. Many of the Mexican soldiers, exhausted from days of marching and
the previous day’s battle, were sleeping (they were in an afternoon siesta). Houston ordered the Texas soldiers
to move forward!
1) What were the Mexicans doing when the Texans attacked?

Many Mexican soldiers were awakened by bullets and battle cries of
“Remember the Alamo” and “Remember Goliad!” The Battle of San Jacinto
lasted only about 18 minutes. Surprised by the afternoon attack, many
Mexican soldiers fled or tried to surrender. The Texan troops continued
firing. When the shooting stopped, 630 Mexican soldiers had been killed.
Only nine Texan troops had been killed or died of wounds from the fighting.
1) What caused the Mexican soldiers to flee and surrender?
A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
They were surprised by the attack.
They didn’t want to fight anymore.
The Texans were too strong.
They had already surrendered
None of the above.
Santa Anna had disappeared during the battle. He was found the next
day hiding in the marsh. Having captured Santa Anna, the Texan army
won not only the Battle of San Jacinto but also the war. Houston
refused to let his soldiers kill the Mexican general. He later explained
his reasons:
“My motive in sparing the life of Santa Anna was to relieve the country
of all hostile enemies without further bloodshed, and to secure his
acknowledgement of our independence.”
1) Based on the quote, with which of the following statements would Sam Houston most likely agree?
