UMI-IFAECI (3351)
General information of the Unit
UMI-IFAECI (Instituto Franco-Argentino sobre Estudios de Clima y sus
Impactos) is an international mixed unit (UMI 3351), located in Buenos Aires,
Argentina jointly sponsored by CNRS, National Council of Scientific and
Technology Research of Argentina (CONICET) and University of Buenos Aires
(UBA). UMI-IFAECI was created on the 1st of January 2010, directed between that day and 30 April 2011 by Dr. Mario Nuñez, and since 1 st May 2011 Dr.
Carolina Vera is the UMI Director. UMI-IFAECI was implemented to strengthen
France-Argentina scientific collaboration on a research agenda oriented to better understand, simulate and predict climate variability and change, as well as their impacts in southern South America and surrounding Oceans. UMI-
IFAECI main scientific goal includes climate modeling, articulating the global scale (focus of CNRS units like IPSL) and the regional scale (focus of CONICET-
UBA units like CIMA), topic very relevant to the needs of Argentina.
UMI-IFAECI is currently focus in promoting a large and multidisciplinary array of scientific interactions between France and Argentina, in order: i) to increase knowledge of physical processes driving climate variability and change at regional scale (South America and South Atlantic), ii) to foster studies addressing how climate variability and change will impact population, biodiversity, production and vulnerability, iii) to generate climate information for application and adaptation
UMI-IFAECI will concentrate its research agenda on three main regions: i) southeastern South America which is characterized by a large climate variability and change signal impacting the most relevant socio-economic regions of
Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, ii) the extratropical Andes region, which is also characterized by a large climate variability and change signal affecting the mountain glaciers and other water sources of impact in the socioeconomic activities of both Argentina and Chile, and iii) the South Atlantic
Ocean, which is the pathway through which the northern and southern limbs of the meridional overturning circulation connect to the World Ocean, and being its western portion one of the most productive regions of the world.
Currently UMI-IFAECI is organized on the basis of the organization chart displayed in Figure 1 and its Researcher staff is listed in Figure 2. The salaries of the Argentinean Researchers are being paid by CONICET, UBA and other
Argentinean Institutions. Moreover, UMI-IFAECI is operating at the facilities of the “Centro de Investigaciones del Mar y la Atmósfera” (CIMA) a joint CONICET-
UBA Institute, through which UMI-IFAECI is funded by those two argentine
Institutions.
Justification of the support requested to CNRS for 2012
Several proposals to LEFE are currently being in preparation by UMI-IFAECI researchers in collaboration with researchers from other CNRS institutes.
Detailed information about them is included in DIALOG. It is expected that such projects if funded will contribute to support the activities of those specific research areas.
It is worth to mention such areas as well as those that have not submitted any
LEFE proposal for 2012, are currently are benefited by the annual budget that
CONICET and UBA provides to CIMA and also they are supported by other projects funded by Argentinean and international funding agencies.
In that sense, the budget requested for UMI-IFAECI to CNRS for 2012 is intended to support basic facilities like those associate to the central computer cluster of the institute as well as to support workshops that will contribute to expand and accelerate the implementation of the UMI-IFAECI scientific agenda.
Objectives 2012
Measurable Objective: Promote the emergence of new projects through the organization of research workshops partially funded by the unit.
Indicators: Number of proposals submitted to national and international funding agencies by research areas.
Target: 30% in 2012.
Measurable Objective: To expand and improve the cluster system of the unit.
Indicators: Cluster activity monitoring parameters
Target: 30% 2012.
