Courses at Recovery College East – Summer 2015
Taking Control
002 - 008
All participants need to attend day one (if possible) and can choose to attend all or
some of the other days. This course looks at how we can overcome mental health
challenges and move forward more powerfully in our lives. By realising our own
strengths, gaining knowledge and sharing skills we can begin to restore control and
balance. At times it can feel easier to allow others to make decisions for us. This
course explores how taking control can empower us to achieve our goals and
develop a stronger sense of self. There will be lots of opportunities to put knowledge
and skills into practice in a supportive environment.
Week 1 - Introductions and overview of the course
002
We will explore what “taking control” means to us and start to think about how we
can achieve more control in our lives.

Journaling and Scrapbooking
013
Journaling can be a first step to exploring our unique creativity. It can be an
opportunity for self-exploration and development and is often useful in our recovery
journey. There are many different types of journals and this course will provide an
opportunity to look at different starting points and ideas. The fun thing about
journaling is that it can include writing, doodling, drawings, collections of meaningful
images and photos, lists, brainstorming and much more to uniquely reflect your own
style and voice.

Breathing Space: An introduction to and an opportunity to practice
mindfulness
015
Life can be challenging when we are facing our own personal struggles: we might
experience our minds being filled with worrying thoughts and self-criticism. There
are times when we might try to tackle these thoughts, but this can leave us feeling
unhappy or perhaps anxious. Mindfulness gives you the chance to see things
differently. Becoming mindful allows you the space to really be in the present
moment. This workshop also provides you with the opportunity to think about
mindfulness as a wellness tool in your recovery journey.

an individual at risk to stay safe. The workshop is practical and interactive and is
designed for anyone who would like the opportunity to be able to talk openly about
the subject of suicide in a safe, supportive environment.
The STOP Suicide workshop has been developed as part of the STOP Suicide
project which is being delivered across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by Mind in
Cambridgeshire, Peterborough & Fenland Mind and Lifecraft, supported by local
Public Health and NHS teams. For more information please see

A Special Scar – surviving bereavement through suicide
(This workshop will be led by a Clinical Psychologist from CPFT)
089
This workshop will consider the impact of bereavement through suicide for family
members and those close to the person. The grief of a suicide takes a different form
than other types of death. What happens to those of us left behind? When our
society often views suicide with fear and disapproval it can be difficult for us to come
to terms with our loss and seek help and support.
