Strengths Weaknesses 13 Sticks to task throughout and all references are relevant. Refers to variety of features / techniques and comments on their effects / relevance to theme. Does not expand on ideas / references (such as Irene’s meddling or explaining reasons for her loneliness which is the key theme being discussed). Some technical errors (spelling / exp). 4 19 Relevant to the task with detailed and insightful analysis. Good evaluation throughout. Some errors in expression. Fails to refer to relevant examples on couple of occasions to back up ideas / points made. Few technical errors (spelling and paragraphing). Essay C 9 16 Thorough analysis and well-structured response to task. Lacks references to obvious filmic techniques – particularly camerawork. Technical errors (expression and punctuation) quite frequent. Essay D 10 9 Very brief! Lacks in-depth analysis of a wide enough range of techniques – references made to the text very limited. Lots of obvious examples overlooked which could have been used to further argument. Essay E 2 12 Good structure, with good use of introductory statements to each paragraph. However intro does not clearly refer to all parts of task (namely how techniques are used to explore the issue). Sticks to the task (which was a demanding one) throughout. Some very effective evaluation at the end. Essay F 3 13 Good, insightful analysis throughout and all examples used were relevant to task. Lacked suitable examples from text at times. The evaluation at the end needs development. Essay G 5 15 Very strong throughout main body of essay. Very thorough analysis. Conclusion bit unclear / needed more references to specific examples from text. Also introduced new ideas at end, rather than reiterating / summing up main points already made. Essay H 1 17 Good analysis throughout, with good evidence of knowledge and understanding of text and themes. Quotes need embedded. Conclusion very brief, but some good evaluation throughout. Essay I 6 5 This is one of those essays where the mark seems particularly harsh as it has lots of strengths! In this case, these are that it does have a line of thought and shows good knowledge & understanding of text & themes. ‘Emotional reactions’ also well-explained. There is NO analysis of filmic techniques and this in itself is enough for the essay to fail. Another less serious flaw is the lack of equal attention given to all aspects of the task (much more on emotional response than there is on intellectual response). Also not enough said about the consequences of the character giving into temptation – i.e. her going to prison (only referred to briefly at very end but should be a fundamental point from outset). Task Number Mark out of 20 Essay A 7 Essay B Limited range of techniques referred to throughout. Some events / references lacked context. More references to text could have been made to further substantiate points.
