More competence in automation – Market Analyze
Statement
“All professionals in operation and maintenance should have certain competencies in automation.
We have to promote competence in Automation on the work floor.” This is the opinion of a lot of
production and / or maintenance managers, to-day.
EURIAC
EURIAC is a Leonardo Project for promoting competence in automation. EURIAC is running from
October 2011 to September 2013 under the Lifelong Learning Programme and financially supported
by the European Commission.
EURIAC aims to create a hands-on, integrated European Class in automation to support VET students
in the acquisition and use of knowledge, skills and competences to facilitate personal development,
employability and entry to a European labor market.
Market Analyze
In the frame of the on-going EURIAC project, first we did a Market Analyze for defining modern
industrial competence profiles in automation.
64 questionnaires were answered correctly and sent-in, from:
Switzerland 25, Finland 13, Denmark 5, Sweden 3, Slovakia 3, Netherlands 2, Hungary 2, Germany 1,
Italy 1, France 1, Poland 1, Portugal 1, Czech Republic 1, Brazil 1, China 1, Morocco 1, Peru 1, Saudi
Arabia 1.
Participating branches
The following branches participated:
Automation 4 - Construction, Facility Management, Consulting, Diagnostics and Maintenance
Services 7 – Food Industry 7 – Hospitals 6 – Iron and Steel, Metallurgy 6 – Logistics, Packaging and
Post Distribution 3 – Pharma, Chemicals and Petrochemicals 6 – Power and Public Management 5 –
Pulp and Paper 2 – Railway and Public Transport 8 – Ship Yards 2 – Universities 8.
Questionnaire:
The aim of the Market Analyze was to know in which areas, companies from different branches are
needing more competence of their operating and maintenance personnel.
The following items were taken in consideration:
Programmable Logic Controllers, PLC systems
Main components in a PLC-controlled system
Main hardware and software processes (standards) in PLC
programs
Fault finding in PLC controlled systems
Instrumentation & Robotics
Inputs and outputs (sensors and switches)
Motors, driver units and servo techniques
Programming
Common logic and switching function of a PLC
Ladder logic symbols for most common functions
Monitors and OP-Panels
