Research Experience Undergraduate Researcher, Dr. Lori Eggert Research Lab University of Missouri January 2013 – Present Developed a research project relating gene flow and habitat structure in a terrestrial salamander. Collected tissue samples from 15 P.shermani at each of 136 sample points in western North Carolina. Extracted DNA from 2000 terrestrial salamander samples using BioRad Instagene Matrix. Used PCR amplification and GeneMarker to size 11 microsatellite loci. Calculated FST values for every pair of sample points to identify the association between slopes and streams with genetic diversification. Field Assistant, Dr. Stephanie Schuttler University of Missouri June 2013 – July 2013 The objective is to identify any resistant behavior of a raccoon eating in the proximity of a carcass. Assisted in putting food, a raccoon carcass, and a squirrel carcass in three areas in a nature reserve. Set up field cameras on nearby trees in a forested area to capture the behavior of approaching animals. Collected data on the level of resistance of a raccoon to a control stuffed animal, a raccoon carcass, and a squirrel carcass with unrelated diseases. Page 2 Lab Assistant, Dr. Lori Eggert Research Lab University of Missouri August 2012 – December 2012 Non-invasive genetic mark-recapture study to estimate the population size and dispersal ecology of Missouri’s bear population. Used PCR amplification and gel electrophoresis to obtain data from bear tissue. Studied mitochondrial DNA to estimate the levels of migration and admixture in Midwestern bear populations. Study Abroad Conservation Biology Course in South Africa Truman State University July 2011 – August 2011 Obtain a better understanding of the conservational policy in a country with highly managed game reserves.
