MCC8G7: Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in 2D and 3D. How can I apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real world scenarios? How can I apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real world scenarios? How can I apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real world scenarios? Essential Question(s) Opening (5-10 min) Work-Time Activities (40 min) Closure Activity (10 min) Use SmartBoard to demonstrate how to find the missing side of a right triangle given the measure of two sides. Use SmartBoard to demonstrate how to find measure from the top a tree to the end of a shadow of the tree. Use SmartBoard to demonstrate the justification for the Pythagorean Theorem using the side of 3 perfect squares. Students will practice using online integrating website over Pythagorean Theorem. And Handout over Pythagorean Theorem Students will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real-world scenarios by drawing and illustration and then identify the legs and hypotenuse. Students will complete a hands-on activity where they cut out their own 3 perfect squares (using Pythagorean Triples) and glue them showing the sides of the squares are the legs and hypotenuse. Students will present problems on the board and explain how to solve them using the appropriate process. Students present problems on the board, draw an illustration, and explain how to solve them using the appropriate process. Students will draw these same illustrations on their IPAD’s using the drawing tool and explain to a partner how it justifies the Pythagorean Theorem. Discuss examples of Pythagorean Triples: Ex Non-Ex 3,4,5 11,12,13 6,8,10 1,2,3 Demonstrate the diagonal of a cube and how to pally the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will work with a partner to find the measure of the diagonal in a 3-D figure using the Pythagorean Theorem. Discuss the requirements and rubric for student project over Pythagorean Theorem. Students will discuss how to find the diagonal of a 3-D figure and which sides are the legs in the 3-D figure. Students will evaluate themselves using the rubrics and discuss their project with a partner.
