Research interests

Miniaturization of analytical methods based on mass spectrometry for proteomic analysis.

Sample preparation for LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) proteomic analysis of biological fluids.

Study of protein-protein interactions of interest in oncology.

Brief profile

I completed my undergraduate education at University of Calabria, in Organic Chemistry. I started to be interested in biological mass spectrometry during a six-month stage I undertake at TNO Pharma (NL), a

CRO devoted to applied research (1998). At the end of the stage, I was employed by the same company with a mixed employee/PhD student 5-year contract. In almost six years spent at TNO, I acquired a solid experience in biological mass spectrometry, and in coupling miniaturized separation methods such as nanoliquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis to mass spectrometry for the analysis of biomolecules such as peptides. In 2004, I went back to Italy as post-doctoral fellow at the University of

Catanzaro (UMG), mainly working on a multidisciplinary project aiming at integrating nanotechnology with proteomics. My main task was to develop silicon-based platforms for the spectrometric analysis of biological samples. Besides, at UMG I have applied the knowledge I acquired in biological mass spectrometry to study the interaction partners of proteins of high bio-medical relevance using an innovative cross-linking approach, and to characterize post-translational modifications of proteins involved in tumorigenesis. As assistant professor (ricercatore) my main focus is to improve LC-MS-based proteomics methods for the proteomic analysis of biological fluids from the point of view of automation, sensitivity and quantitative precision.
