It drives specialized plans for various areas of the college development. Annual Planning Annual planning is a part of strategic planning. So annual planning is carried out to fulfill strategic goals and objectives stated in strategic plan. Annual planning process initiates to develop next year‘s plan and it evaluates previous year‘s activities too. Monthly Planning Monthly planning is a part of annual planning. Every month we have a meeting of College Management Board and decide to do some initiative activities which are necessary to develop. College Management Board, faculties, staffs and students are involved in monthly planning process. Quality Improvement Planning Quality improvement planning is an integrated part of the college planning model. This process draws some inputs from annual planning and monthly planning process mostly focusing on vision, mission and goals. This planning model envisions total quality improvement planning of the college. Review Continues evaluation and review of the plan is to identify real problems which are arising day by day. So this is the ultimate success of strategic and annual planning. College Management Board initiates to identify real problems and make progress reports for the submission to College Management Team to review strategic plan. This process is very important to develop over all strategic planning. Self-Study Report Preparation How it is understood Due to the several reasons, there is a huge gap in policy endorsed by the government of Nepal and its implementation. Nepal‘s education sector is not away from this fact hence higher education institutions are facing such problems to practice the policy in reality. In this context, the initiation of awarding the accreditation by the UGC to these institutions is highly appreciable as it supports to increase the quality of education and the education service delivery in Nepal. This self study report prepared by SWSC and submitted to the UGC is the product of this initiative so as to get the accreditation. This report reflects the real situation and status of SWSC including the facilities and service, major highlights, challenges along with the information related to the eight criteria and benchmarks. Though the college has already prepared 58 a document compiling several information for the ISO 9001:2000 certificate, this document is the first prepared in this kind and process. Thus this is the most important and useful document for the college too as every sector of the college is reflected in this document. This document becomes the guideline for the college management team for the future planning, internal assessment and self assessment. It has also massively facilitated the institution in conducting various academic programs in systematic and scientific way through documentation. Formation of SSR team SWSC had constituted a Self Study Report Preparation Team in the chairmanship of Dr. Rajendra K.C along with the following members. 1. Mr. Tikaram Mahara 2. Mr. Mahesh Shrestha 3. Mr. Milan Neupane 4. Mr. Kamal Devkota Among the above mentioned team memebers, Dr. Rajendra KC took advisory role and allocated his time during the meetings. Other management team and administrative staffs put substantial contribution while preparing the report. Approaches SWSC organized series of orientation programs to its teaching and non teaching staffs after the SSR team was formed. Information regarding the accreditation process and procedures were presented in the orientation programs. Basic requirement of the institution for the accreditation were presented in these events. Staffs (both teaching and non teaching) were assigned to be prepared on the pre requisites in this process. These people were agreed to contribute from their sector so as to get the accreditation. Several meetings and discussions were held among the staffs to update them about the report preparation phase and collected their inputs to make the report more realistic and concrete. Several seminars were given to the stakeholders by the SSR committees during the self assessment process and made them aware for the quality service delivery. Besides, some members of the SSR team visited the already accredited higher secondary institutions as the exposure visits during the self study report preparation process. Meetings with team members of SSR committee from BalKumari College Chitawan Nepal were held for their experience sharing. Some best practices have been replicated in SWSC after the SSR team members visit to these institutions. Regular interaction with the UGC officials particularly the second higher education project was done. Validation The self study report preparation committee members were chosen from the different departments and backgrounds. Some of these are partially involved in research and project management where they are directly involved in assessment and report writing. This committee thoroughly went through system of college in every sector to prepare the report. Once the report was prepared by the committee, college management committee reviewed it precisely and put their comments on the report. All the department heads also put their corrections in the report. Again the SSR preparation team incorporated the comments by management team and made final draft of the report. Finally the College Board read the report and made some necessary correction. A final report is submitted by the team with several corrections from all management teams. 59 Policy and Procedures The college is trying to provide the quality education for the students admitted from different parts. They inform the college administration about their opinion on teachers‘ performance, classroom activities and evaluation of the college experience. SWSC believes that quality education is impossible without research. The management team of SWSC has established a research center named Southwestern Academic Research Center (SWARC). Faculty members and students are exposed in research activities by the SWARC. It regularly conducts different workshops and trainings to increase professionalism, leadership skill and presentation skills to the students and teachers. SWARC has taken initiatives to promote partnership with external organizations by launching outreach programs involving different GOs ans I/NGOs. Curricular Aspects SWSC has been consistently running with its vision, mission, goals, and spirits to manage practical education through research led teaching and social activities in the societies. Also we have Internal Quality Assurance Cell in the college and the subject committees take care about the quality control process and practices. There are different areas of studies open for the aspiring students. Various optional and elective subjects are offered according their choices. BBS, BBA, BA in social work (BSW) and MBS are currently running at this college, PhD facilitate where as BSc, and A level course by Cambridge University are in pipeline. Students can choose different elective subjects according to their interest and availability in the college. SWSC has conducted programs in the morning shift and day shift to facilitate the needs of students. SWSC has been organizing different subject wise interaction programs collaboration with other higher education institutions. These programs are organized to review existing curriculum, put substantive feedback and discuss about the loopholes for strengthening the ongoing teaching learning methodologies. SWSC has been linked with different organizations like HSEB, Tribhuvan University for Bachelor Level, Southwestern Cooperative, International A levels program from Cambridge University, Management Association of Nepal (MAN) ,HISSAN, LCCI, BMTRADA (organization to provide ISO) and different other international institutions. Beside we have very good intercollege relationship with other colleges in this area. SWSC is aware about its responsibilities. Its motto is research, teaching and social activities. Generally social work students are mobilized in social work activities. They identify problems in different communities and do the activities to solve these problems. Frequently they are given civic education classes as a part of regular class twice a month. Because of this, they learn lots of things. It includes all round development of the students from that type of programs they learn about time management, leadership skills, motivation, life skill development, mass communication and social awareness. From these all they can get ideas about moral and ethical values of education in the societies in real life situation. Teaching-Learning and Evaluation SWSC is committed to expose its students in international standard of teaching and learning system so that they can easily cope with their further studies at any corner of the world. Some of the main objectives of adopting different widely accepted teaching and learning approaches are to make students used to in this highly competitive job market. This college formally announces the admission in its different level to enroll students. College notice board, website, different social medias and sometimes commercial medias are used to flow the information regarding the admission. Interested students are requested to fill the admission form with necessary documents in the specified time. They are admitted mainly on merit basis and their performance in the entrance test. Previous track records, intelligence, potentiality in any particular sector, socio-cultural and geographical heterogeneity etc are some other basis of selecting students for the enrollment. Needy students are provided full and partial scholarships as per the rules. We give high priority to maintain the social and cultural diversity to form the sections although academic performance is the major factor in this regard. Newly enrolled students are given counseling and orientation classes before their classes are commence. They have to receive the oath by college so that they will maintain the discipline during their stay in college. 62 As we persuade the students with better achievements in their previous degree from the educational institutions from rural areas where English is not the medium of teaching to enroll, the college manage extra English language classes to the needy students with free of cost. Students are exposed in reading and writing practices in English in these classes. Similarly, the college manages extra tutorial classes to the weak students during the exam periods nevertheless our aim is not only to pass our students in exam. In today‘s context, Nepalese graduate students are compelled to join several professional trainings like accounting, report and proposal writing, etc. so as to get better jobs in the market once they passed their academic degree from the college. SWSC advocates for the enhancement of both knowledge and skill during their academic course. In this regard, college has regular schedule of such professional trainings. Till date, trainings on civic education, time management, report writing, proposal writing etc were organized. Thematic experts are the invited as the facilitator in such trainings. Each teacher has to attend one day workshop organized by the college for the preparation of yearly lesson plan before the commencement of their classes. Regular presentations by the students either through multi-media or other tools are compulsory in each class. Sometimes cross classes are managed in all possible subjects. A single teacher is not responsible for a whole course in any classes. Cross correction of assignments is provisioned in the college. Initially students check their mate‘s assignment as per their capacity and then teacher put their comments and suggestions to both submitters and checkers. Students have to participate in different level of discussions, interactions and social activities organized by the college with its partner organizations. Specially the students of social sciences are exposed in critically reviewing the books, articles, papers etc and present their views towards the readings. Internet based assignments are also managed in the college. However it depends up on the subject and teachers too. Faculty members in this college are qualified, experienced and professionals. Their experiences, qualification and capabilities are mainly evaluated during the recruitment. Most of the faculty members are fulltime where as some are part time too. Besides the fulltime professional faculties; professors, researchers, senior managers, I/NGO professionals, bankers, writers, lawyers also are in the college as visiting faculty members. Their experiences have been supporting students for the better performance. The college has managed three internal exams namely first terminal, second terminal and pre board exam. Re exams are managed to those students who become failed in any of these three exams. They have to appear in such exam until they passed in the failed subject. Regular feedbacks are given to the students in their performance in the exams. Besides, surprise test and unit test are also managed as per the necessary. Necessary handouts are given to students from the respective subject teachers. Student‘s assignment basically the reports, term papers and thesis are kept in library which could be used as the reference materials by other students. Student at SWSC are given the opportunities of publishing their short articles in the regular publications of SWSC. Some of their selected papers are published in Southwestern Education Hub- a trimester journal published by the college where as short articles are being published in the monthly newspaper. Performance based award system is being implemented in the college. Students who secure the first position in internal exam are awarded an installment waiver in the fee. Extracurricular activities are being organized in regular basis which are listed in the college yearly calendar. Students with better performance in such activities like sports, music and other academic activities are given national and international platforms. College management and faculty members are committed to enhance student‘s academic and cocurricular achievements. Southwestern Academic Research Centre (SWARC) is a part of this college to lead the research based activities collaborating with college and other partners. It is in the sense that a separate Autonomous Body with the concept of Auto-Run has been formed which will be totally responsible for the research related aspects. The reason behind this separate entity is simply to let the Research Body work widely and openlywhile providing the opportunity of grabbing and earning direct and indirect benefits of one another. Following is the team composition in this center. Dr. Jaya Hari Raj Pandey Prof. Dr. Abadesh Thakur Member Dr. Krishna Bahadur Karki Member Mr. Bijaya Sagar Pradhan Member Secretary Er.
